Vit D and Covid-19. If anyone missed it, scientists in Oakridge Tennessee have made some amazing strides towards decoding Covid. They fed 17,000 Covid genetic samples, compared to 40,000 healthy genetic samples into the second fastest computer in the world, the SUMMIT super computer. (not to be confused with the Sammit super processor, lol) It processed 2.5 billion calculations, and took almost a week to complete. David Jacobson, Chief Scientist at Oakridge discovered that wh...at was thought to be a Cytokine storm causing the multiple issues when infected with Covid, was more likely a Bradykinin storm. Bradykinin is a compound the body produces that regulates blood pressure. Now with the increase in Bradykinin levels the blood vessels become more permeable, and fluid leaks out. That can cause a dry cough, myalgia, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches and even sudden cardiac death. All of these concerns have been mystifying symptoms of Covid-19. It has also been discovered that those with a Vitamin D deficiency have higher rates of complications from Covid-19. A study in the Journal of American Medicine: statesThe multivariable analysis suggests that persons who are likely to have deficient vitamin D levels at the time of COVID-19 testing were at substantially higher risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than were persons who were likely to have sufficient levels. Sourced from CTV news. Vitamin D is converted from the suns rays on our bodies to Vitamin D, other sources are egg yolks, foods fortified with Vit D like milk, orange juice, and soy milk. So how is it that some countries that have an abundance of sun have also had increased numbers of Covid-19? The more melanin (melanin darkens the skin) reduces the skin's ability to make Vitamin D in response to sunlight exposure, So the darker the skin, the less uptake of Vitamin D from the sun, and a resulting deficiency. Also, wearing clothes, hats and sun block also reduces the uptake of Vitamin D. Studies are still ongoing. Nothing is conclusive yet, as some of these countries with a high incidence of Covid-19 cases were also early on in the exposure to the virus, and perhaps didn't have enough early warning to take precautionary measures.. Also some of these countries have an increased elderly population, thus more compromised immune systems. Regardless, if one doesn't get much sun, for example us Canadians in the winter months, and one doesn't supplement with Vitamin D, it might be a good idea to start. Having said that, because some is good, does not mean more is better. One can overdose on Vitamin D. 600 IU is a good daily dose, and anyone over 60 - 70 years old should consider taking 800 IU, as the elderly don't metabolize Vitamin D as well. All this is good news, as we start to understand this mysterious virus, we have more tools to keep us healthy. Msg from our loyal member Peggy. For those of you who are hesitant to come out to workout, this amazing lady says come out and see how safe an environment it is. Peggy asked me to write this out, as a vulnerable senior, with COPD, and other health issues, she feels comfortable with the sanitizing regime, only 1 person working out per room, and the air exchange between clients. Thank you Peggy for your support and confidence in us, you are an incredible inspiration to all of us :) Deb
Loving the connection with this beautiful lady. Hearing of the successes of her kids, her grand kids and great grand kids, and their endeavours. The apples don't fall far from the tree. When asked how she succeeds in her healthy lifestyle, she suggests starting with the cupboards, cleaning them out of anything not healthy, to avoid the temptation and stocking it with only healthy choices. Thank you Barb for the inspirational ideas. Amen.
So great to catch up with Lennie again she radiates sunshine with her smile when she is in the room. She shared her favourite saying, "Better to be 6 feet apart, than 6 feet under". This speaks volumes!! Well said!!!
So wonderful to catch up with this beautiful lady. We had a great discussion about the increased challenges everyone has been going through. There are enough hardships in these times. If nothing else. Be kind. We never know what others are going through. Louise mentioned it is like someone having a "Baby in the back". Had never heard that analogy before. She said it's like a woman driving, and she keeps looking back, and swerving left and right. A man behind her is grumblin...g and complaining, and swearing at her " she doesn't know how to drive, what is wrong with her..." As he pulled along side of her, he realized she was looking back, because her baby was choking in the back seat. Please, be kind to others, you never know if they have a Baby in the back. Peace See more
There is light above those clouds!!! Thankfully we have been given permission to open again!!! It will be 4 months since we closed our doors, and looking forwar...d to seeing the lovely faces of my Fitness family again!!! Everyone will get their time missed, added to their membership, as I promised. We will be following protocol by allowing only so many members at a time, and asking that they preferably text me first or call to book their time slot. 705-828-0055. With the text, please confirm your e-mail address, so I can give as much information, new location, directions, protocol, etc., via a letter. Once you have your time slot, I can answer more questions. i will be giving each member an hour, then 1/2 to thoroughly clean and sanitize the equipment, door handles, high touch surfaces, etc, between members. I have been working diligently to make the new site as welcoming, comfortable, and safe as possible. I have contacted as many as possible, drawing on the sign in sheet as a reference, to communicate, but recently have been digging in to get projects accomplished, such as 13 Tandem loads of gravel to make sufficient parking for everyone. It is with heavy heart that I gave up the previous location, The new location will be more convenient for some, and perhaps not so convenient for others. My apologies if this move creates a hardship to anyone. Because of the mandated lockdown, expense to pay the overhead, but without the income for 4 months, remaining at the same location just wasn't possible. If I could, I truly would. Please text me (preferred), phone, or e-mail me your preferred time starting Monday July 20, at either 7:30, 9:00, 10:30, 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, 4:30, 6:00, or 7:30. Please send your first, second, and third preferred time. Please respect, that when your hour is complete, I must take time to sanitize everything before the next arrival, so not being rude, but the safety of my members come first. I also ask that you use the sanitizer I will be supplying when you first arrive, and when moving from the circuit room to the cardio room or back, and upon finishing your workout. Respect the minimum 6 ft social distance. Please, if you are not feeling well, have a fever, have lost your sense of taste or smell, or have travelled from a Covid positive area, I ask that you decline coming out, but PLEASE text or call me, so I can pass that time slot on to the next member. This plan is fluid, and will change as directed, or depending on so many factors. If you don't feel comfortable starting now, and wish to begin later, you will still get your additional time added to your membership. Sincerely looking forward to seeing everyone again!!!
