We have responded to several back-country incidents in the past month that occurred late in the afternoon. All of the groups in these incidents had good two-way... emergency communication devices which allowed for a quick response and rescue of the injured individuals before dark. We would like to remind back-country travellers that it is a good practise when possible to be out of hazardous terrain a couple hours prior to darkness. This allows for a rescue to occur before dark if something goes wrong. Rescues typically take a minimum of 1.5-2 hours when everything goes smoothly and we have the flying conditions with enough daylight to reach people using a helicopter. Ground based rescues and technical rope rescues often take much longer. In addition to carrying an emergency communication device, having extra clothing and an emergency Bothy shelter style tarp are things that can really help improve a bad situation in a winter environment. These tarps can be used to huddle under and help keep an injured person warm, or as a toboggan to move an injured person to a better location.
