We've been getting questions about ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound). Most of us are familiar with 2D hand held ultrasound, but ABUS is a bit different and off...ers more advanced technology. ABUS is 3D and uses a large transducer that runs over the breast a few times, pain free.There is no radiation. ABUS, like 2D ultrasound, is recommended for women with dense breasts in addition to mammogram because dense tissue and cancer both show up as white on mammogram, creating a masking effect. ABUS picks up an additional 3.6 cancers/1000. These cancers were missed by mammogram. ABUS can find cancers early, small and node negative. Early detection offers better outcomes.
