We are saddened by the news of celebrated Hornby Island ceramicist Wayne Ngan’s passing last Friday. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. We look forwa...rd to sharing a selection of Ngan’s work with old and new audiences in the upcoming exhibition "Modern In The Making: Post-War Craft and Design in British Columbia," which will open at the Gallery on July 18. Interim Director and co-curator of the exhibition, Daina Augaitis, remembers the artist: In researching the exhibition 'Modern in the Making,' a group of us co-curators had a wonderful visit with Wayne Ngan last year to discuss which of his objects ought be in the show. The visit took place at the home of a significant collector, and it was a delight to watch Wayne become re-acquainted with his pots that he hadn’t seen for years. He was a perceptive critic of his own work, loving some pieces but dismissing others. It was not only an opportunity to deeply examine his aesthetic style but to also hear Wayne speak about the various phases of his career, to catch a glimpse of his exceptional drive for excellence, and to gain insights into the unique nature of being a ceramicist in BC during the last five decades. Wayne Ngan was a giant in the field of Canadian ceramics whose star kept rising internationally, and his spirit of discovery is evident in the outstanding work that he produced.
