We are in the depth of the winter and it is good that we take a note of the importance of supplementing our diet with the most essential of vitamins Vitamin C. Water-soluble crucial element is absolutely necessary for the proper working of out cells basic machinery. Doctors recommend a minimum dose for school-age children of 75 mg/ day. Fruit is a good source of Vitamin C but the chemical is quickly broken down by storage, ripening, and exposure to light. Infections and cold rapidly deplete our limited stores of Vitamin C. The double Nobel prize winner Linus Pauling was perhaps the most influential proponent of taking large doses of Vitamin C. He outlined his theory in his best selling book "Vitamin C and the Common Cold" and a subsequent book "Vitamin C and the Flu". Both books warrant a respectful read.

Research shows that physical activity improves academic performance. It reduces the stress level and improves mental health, something that is much needed especially now as exams just around the corner. At Rutherford we try to balance both academic and physical education, it's part of our weekly routine. Every Wednesday, 11AM- 1PM, we're going with our grade 9 - 12 students ice skating at Maple Community Center. It is one of the most fun ways for them to exercise, bound further with classmates and teachers and most importantly it helps them in unwinding from long days of studying and stress.
