We live in a world of shiny objects, dancing to and fro. Beckoning us to skip right over the messy stuff to an ideal solution to our biggest concerns. When that doesn't stick and the cracks start to show again, we might layer on another patch, thinking "This is it. This is the sparkly glue that will finally make everything fall into place." After a while what we have is added complexity and a messy toolbox. We haven't saved money or time and there are more details and decisio...ns filling our headspace. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of great tools and ideas out there for increasing productivity, organizing and improving communication. But the problem is starting with the solution. There are so many options, how do you make the best choice for improvement if you don't have an objective assessment of what is happening at every step, what is actually providing real value to you and your customers? Fixing the foundation means scraping back the gunk that builds up and getting at the really good stuff that wants to grow and prosper. Improving the best and ditching the rest. Wow, that was a good rhyme I must say. But not my best... Seriously though, is it time to call the process detective?

Have a great business idea (or so you think...)? Here's a quick book review for business owners and entrepreneurial hopefuls. Testing Business Ideas by David Bland and Alex Osterwalder lays out 44 experiments to objectively evaluate which potential customers actually need your service and whether or not they will pay for it. Before quitting your day job or investing hard cash in developing new product or service, taking a more scientific approach can help you refine your in...tuition and passion and avoid the shock of no one actually buying because you made false assumptions. I have been working through some of these in a business incubator and it is harder than it sounds, especially getting research interviews for B2B services. But there are so many more ways to test your idea laid out in the book. I especially recommend this if you want to launch a tangible product or software. Check it out! Be systematic when solving problems. #processdetective

How does your company prevent mistakes from reaching customers? If defects are regularly allowed to flow through the process, this can be really bad news for your reputation and bottom line! The best ways to deal with defects are to prevent them and for everyone be on the same page about what level of quality is expected... by the customer....
