Custom Orthotics An orthotic can be inserted into the shoe to support, align, prevent and or accommodate foot deformities and improve foot function. Used in conjunction with appropriate footwear, an orthotic can be effective in helping to treat a number of foot and lower limb conditions Compression Stockings If you suffer from a venous disorder such as edema, phlebitis, or thrombosis, compression stockings may be able to help
What is an Orthotic? Orthotics can be described as; soft, semi rigid or rigid, functional or accommodative } There are many different types of orthotics made from many different types of materials, which balance and support the foot.... } The purpose of the treatment is to try to minimize or eliminate the need for the foot to over-compensate for a structural deformity or mal-alignment. } They provide functional control, shock absorbency and redistribute pressure across a greater surface area of the foot. } There efficiency is enhanced by appropriate footwear selection and they are usually used in conjunction with stretching and muscle strengthening exercises, as part of an overall treatment plan. Custom made orthotics during pregnancy Due to the mothers body mass increasing and centre of gravity shifting forward, greater stress and demand is placed upon the lower lumbar region causing pelvic instability. Custom made orthotics can be used to help increase stabilization of the joints of the lower limb, therefore increasing the efficiency of gait (human walking patterns). Compression and Pregnancy Wearing Compression stockings is a simple, but very effective way to relieve or prevent venous problems. As an expectant mother your body undergoes some enormous changes, this also applies to your legs. Swollen legs are an unpleasant side effect during pregnancy. One in two expectant mothers experience pathological venous changes, the result is varicose veins. Obstetricians recommend wearing medical compression stockings starting at 12 weeks. These stockings exert a precisely defined amount of compression and support your veins. The best part is that they work from outside your body, and your hormone levels are unaffected!
