Yesterday, Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains announced a $49 million dollar grant to help fund a nation-wide health data platform. The Digital Health and Discovery Platform (DHDP) is a network to be used by doctors and researchers to fast-track the advancement of treatments and cures for diseases, initially setting its sights on cancer. The project is being led by the Terry Fox Research Institute, who recently was awarded $150 million over the next five years to create the ne...w Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network. The Terry Fox Foundation and the network's foundation partners will contribute matching funds to this Health Canada grant. Along with Montreal startup Imagia and their advanced AI technology, these networks will allow oncologists to provide personalized medicine to their cancer patients. The government funding announced yesterday for the DHDP is coming from stream 4 of the Strategic Innovation Fund, and will also help create highly skilled job and training opportunities across the country. The Terry Fox Research Institute has been a pro bono client of Prospectus for the last several years, and Bill Pristanski chairs the Board of Directors at the Terry Fox Foundation. Prospectus is excited to get this revolutionary network off the ground using innovative research and AI capabilities from both TFRI and Imagia to cure cancer in our lifetime. Pristanski was at the announcement made yesterday in Montreal.

Bill Pristanski attended the Hockey of Hall of Fame this past weekend. The NHL has been a client of ours since 1996. One of the highlights for Pristanski was attending the dinner on Sunday evening to honour Willie O’Ree, who became the first black man to play in the NHL on January 18, 1958. Willie was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Builder category at the ceremony on Monday. The magnitude of Willie O'Ree's hockey career as a black player cannot be underestimated. The ...second black player to join the NHL was Mike Marson, and that did not take place until the 1974-75 season with the Washington Capitals. O'Ree's NHL career, albeit brief, opened the door for other players of various races to dream about NHL careers. While working for a San Diego hotel in 1998, the NHL hired Willie as the Director of Youth Development for its diversity task force. The NHL/USA Hockey Diversity Task Force is a non-profit program that encourages minority youngsters to play hockey. The results are palpable. In addition, NHL players are now required to enroll in a pre-season diversity training seminar, and race-based verbal abuse is punished through suspensions and fines.

On October 30, Bill Pristanski attended the annual President’s reception in Federation Hall to thank the University of Waterloo’s major donors. The keynote speaker was Professor Strickland. Earlier this fall, the professor became the first living woman to ever win the Nobel Prize for Physics. Strickland, who helped revolutionize laser physics, shares half the $1.4 million Nobel Prize with French laser physicist Gérard Mourou. Together they paved the way toward the shortest ...and most intense laser pulses created by humankind. The team’s research has a number of applications today in industry and medicine everything from laser eye surgery to laser printers. Pristanski, a Sir James Dunn Scholar and DesCartes Fellow, holds an Honours Co-operative degree in Mathematics (Computer Science and Statistics) from the University of Waterloo. He is currently serving on the Board of Governors of the University of Waterloo. A globally focused institution, celebrated as Canada’s most innovative university for 27 consecutive years, Waterloo is home to the world’s largest post-secondary co-operative education program and encourages enterprising partnerships in learning, research and discovery.
