STAFF SPOTLIGHT! Ichiro Watanabe, P.Eng. A firm Partner as well as a Senior Structural Engineer, Ichiro has been with Protostatix for over 12 years.... Ichiro has extensive structural engineering experience, both in design and in the field, with a wide variety of materials, including concrete, steel, masonry and timber. His areas of concentration and expertise, and where he has excelled the most, are in the design of institutional and educational facilities, and he is currently working on the new Dr. Anne Anderson IPD school. Ichiro moved to Canada from Japan when he was 16, and lived in St. Albert with his host family while attending Paul Kane School which Protostatix Engineering is currently rebuilding! Ichiro originally wanted to be an Architect, but being more mathematically-minded, he chose Structural Engineering as his career, knowing that working alongside Architects would inspire him. When he’s not busy engineering buildings, you can find Ichiro hitting the slopes with his family. He likes to snowboard, camp, spend time with his wife and two children, and read Japanese comics and novels. We asked Ichiro a few questions from the Proust Questionnaire: What is your idea of perfect happiness? A vacation without getting email notifications. Where would you most like to live? Somewhere close to the mountains, but where I can also eat fresh seafood! Who are your favorite writers? Haruki Murakami #yeg #staffspotlight #yegbuilds #design #structuralengineering #qanda #explorealberta

Today’s #ThrowbackThursday is highlighting one of Edmonton's premiere recreational facilities. The world-class Terwillegar Recreational Centre is located in southwest Edmonton, and serves as an athletic hub for the city and its surrounding communities. Built in 2010, Terwillegar Community Rec Centre features an expansive aquatic centre, which includes a full size saltwater competition pool, saltwater leisure and wave pool, saltwater whirpool, a lazy river and water slid...es. The fitness centre includes a 260 metre indoor track, studio space, and the latest in exercise equipment. The facility houses 4 NHL-sized arenas, 20 dressing rooms, and room for over 700 spectators. Structurally, the roof consists of multiple planes at various elevations and different shapes and slopes that provide proper volumes, separation, and relief for very divergent space functions. The structural steel roof is supported on long span ‘Y-trusses’ that provide column free floor space where required. The pool system and floor of the entire centre are built of reinforced concrete structural slabs, and walls supported on reinforced concrete piles. #structuralengineering #athletics #throwback #concrete #construction #yeg #architecture #structural @ Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre See more
