Pro tip: do not put your mask in the same pocket as your loose dog kibble.
Two different trials. Two different locations. Six handlers. Same weekend. Congrats to all competitors!
Club members Chantal and Lindsey doing us proud in their BH tests at Sturgeon Schutzhund Club two weeks ago. Next weekend we have 5 more dogs going for titles in two provinces so good luck to them.
Don’t have a mirror? Or a spotter? We got you.
If nothing changes, nothing changes.
Happy international dog day.
Igy, a 2020-as gyri WUSV világbajnokság megrendezését az MNJK lemondani kényszerül! A WUSV rendezvénynaptárából idén törlésre kerül a világbajnokság. Addig is, vigyázzunk egymásra, vigyázzatok magatokra! Hajrá Magyarok! Üdvözlettel: az MNJK vezetsége és a világbajnokság szervez bizottsága See more
Hats off to all competitors who put themselves out there!! A full day, indeed. Special thanks to Lance Collins for judging and Gaeleen Ratté for managing the trial.
We knew it. We really do love our dogs.
It’s trial day! Good luck to all competitors. Competitors & spectators: please read all COVID-19 rules and precautions. Let’s keep everyone safe today.
Hello GSSCC members, Amid the growing concerns about COVID-19, the GSSCC continues to monitor government updates on restrictions that affect us all. All regio...ns have people affected with COVID-19. We encourage caution and to adhere to government directives to stay safe, healthy and to minimize risk. There is a very strong possibility that some Regions will not be able to host a Regional Championship due to restrictions from the COVID 19 virus. If that happens, the GSSCC Board of Directors agree that any member in that affected Region wanting to attend the 2020 Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championship and Sieger Show will be allowed to enter as if they successfully passed their Regional Championship. As far as the Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championship and Sieger Show, it is too early to know if it will be affected by the restrictions. This is the same as the World Championship in Hungary. Only time will tell. In the meantime, please follow your governments restrictions. Due to the ongoing situation with the VDH banning the SV judges and the world wide pandemic restrictions, at this time, the GSSCC is urging all clubs and regions to book ONLY GSSCC judges for all trials in 2020. If/when the restrictions are lifted and the VDH allows the release of the SV judges, then any judge can be requested. Please stay healthy everyone. Darin M. Clarke President, GSSCC
Did I leave that tug out? What is that? Chewing up underwear again? Whaaaat?
Via German Shepherd Schutzhund Club of Canada To all GSSCC members. Due to the current COVID restrictions, the uncertainty of future restrictions and the cancellation of the WUSV Championship, the GSSCC Board of Directors has cancelled the 2020 Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championships and Sieger Show. This was an extremely hard decision but there is no other decision we could make.... Details for a meeting of the members is being worked on and will be finalized by July. Future Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championships and Sieger Shows: ~ 2021 - Ontario Region, held by the Scarborough Select German Shepherd Schutzhund Cub. ~ 2022 - Quebec Region, held by IPO Nord. ~ 2023 - East Region, held by Fundy Schutzhund Club. ~ 2024 - West Region, committee to be announced. Stay healthy and safe Darin M. Clarke President, GSSCC
Nature is thriving with less people (and mowing!). The 4 goslings + mom + dad camped out on the training field will also attest to this.
PSA: read this book.
A well deserved lunch after a morning of tracking. Work Week 31, here we come! Missing: Sue & Len, Pete & Shari, Debbie, Lindsey, and Chandra.
Training Directors being running across the field like STOP!!! (Sound on)
Public distancing Schutzhund style.
Me: Ah, I can’t wait to enjoy a peaceful walk with my dog after a long day. Dog: Pull, beeotch. - Jabina Karma (2018)
You know it’s going to be a long session when your helper says, you have to be more interesting than dirt.
Who is entering what trial?
For both you and your dog.

Want to wake up early to go tracking? Get out of the ‘grey zone’ when training? Work on your fitness levels, alongside your dog? Research has shown that it takes at least 66 days to form a new habit; the time depends on the neuroplasticity of the individual’s brain. At first, willpower or motivation might get us through the first few days or weeks of forming a new habit. The problem with willpower is that we suffer from decision fatigue or ego depletion. No matter how motivated you are to create new habits, this feeling will always wane. The only way to truly change is to be disciplined. This is a practice and won’t happen overnight. But here’s the key difference between winners and others: winners do the shit that no one else wants to do. For 66 days and beyond. YOU GOT THIS AND YOU CAN DO THIS!!
A few pics from our trial last weekend with Lance Collins.
Another great trial on the books. Thanks to all competitors. There are always surprises and it’s not easy! Special thanks to Judge Lance Collins and Trial Manager Jeanne Novak. And congrats to Chantal Ratté who couldn’t join us this weekend - instead she became the National Junior CKC Obedience Champion!
Fall Trail 2019 Trial Schedule Entries: 7 IGP dogs, 3 BH dogs Friday 7:30 PM - Handler Meeting... Saturday 9-11 AM - Tracking 11:30 - IGP Obedience 12:45 - Lunch 1:45 - BH Obedience 2:30 - Protection 4:00 - BH Traffic Test 5:30 - Awards and Supper
Good luck, Team Canada!
Crystal and Karma work under huge distraction - Chantal and Tango in the background doing post work. This is super important and your dog doesn’t need to be titled to do this - Karma is 18 mos. - this is part of the proofing and securing phases. Train for all scenarios! Who knows what will happen on trial day.
When you ask the club toddler if it’s time for beer and she says no we still have one more dog to finish.
And we wonder why some dogs are unclear.
Dark matter. Successive approximation. Dead zones. Timing. Choices. Fear. There’s always so much to cover and not enough time. 2 days left!
Happy birthday Jeff!! Remember that time we played the clicker shaping game and got you to buy a round of beer?? Oh yeah, that was 10 minutes ago. Video forthcoming.
You know it’s getting serious when there’s no dogs at Tracking 101.
Day 1 of a 5-day seminar. We’re all in our happy place. Getting uncomfortable. Burning our ships. Getting bigger and better.
One of the best books I've ever read related to goal setting/breaking, habits, and discipline is James Clear's Atomic Habits. Strongly recommend for those who are looking to up their game! It comes it an audiobook too, so you can listen to it on the way to the dog club!!
Let's Talk About... the Prong Collar. Facts, not emotions: The prong, or pinch, collar was first patented by Herm Sprenger in the late 1800s, and the design ha...s evolved over the decades with improved knowledge, experience, and materials. It should be noted that Herm Sprenger (*not* "Springer") are one of only a very small handful of prong collar manufacturers that reputable trainers recommend, and arguably the best. The collar itself: The individual prongs themselves are angled in and blunt at the ends, NEVER sharp. They are not designed to stab like a needle, or injure the dog. Due to the mechanical design, pressure is distributed evenly around the neck, and this pressure is felt far more readily than that of a choke/check chain, or flat collar. Ergo, less pressure is required to be used by the handler. This is particularly useful for handlers who have strength or mobility issues, or who have very large dogs. Also important to observe is that there is a martingale chain that connects each side of the collar, which prevents the collar from tightening excessively or dangerously, as can happen with a choke or check chain that is not used appropriately. The mechanics of the collar, as explained by a mechanical engineer: F = force applied by the handler. FA, FB, FC etc = force applied on dog's neck. The tip exerts the force in opposite direction of pull. This is because of the lever effect created by the fulcrum (shown in the red circle). Now the important part: anatomy, not physics. A dog’s neck is sensitive at the throat and strong at the side and back. FE is force applied at neck and FB & FC are force applied on side of neck. Now FA = F cos (angle made by FA and F); similarly, FB, FC etc. If you look at a trigonometry book, the greater the angle between F and the direction of resultant force (FA, FB etc), the lesser is the force. So you can see the force on the neck/throat is almost zero. And the force on the side of neck is almost equal to what you apply. Please do bear in mind that this post is about the science behind the prong collar - not your *feelings*. If you don't like this particular tool, it's pretty simple: don't use it. But also bear in mind that, if you haven't ever used it, then your opinion of it is based on nothing more than emotion and/or hearsay. If you are triggered by this post, ask yourself why - based on *fact* :-) And finally, always please remember: TOOLS DON'T TRAIN DOGS; TRAINING TRAINS DOGS! If your trainer puts one of these on your dog to "teach it to walk nicely to Heel", I would suggest firing them and finding a trainer who understands how to teach Handler Awareness, the Step Sit, and actually train the dog. If your dog will only walk to Heel when it is wearing equipment (of any kind), it's not trained :-) Thank you for reading!
Congrats Mary Grainger and Rokita who competed at the Canadian Nationals! We were thrilled that two of our clubbies competed at this level. The hardest part is getting on the field!
