A question that people often ask is How do I know if I need to see a mental health professional? Sometimes this question is easy to answer or another person will answer it for you (e.g., your doctor has recommended therapy). However, for many people this is a difficult question to answer especially given that there is still a great deal of stigma attached to the idea of having a mental health problem. People often believe (or are told) that if they just try a little hard...er or wait it out a little longer their anxiety or low mood or stress will work itself out. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. So, how do you know if you should seek help? The short answer is: you should consider professional help when you are unhappy, or when you wish you could be happier, or when your anxiety or distress is interfering with your functioning at work and/or in other areas of life. The longer answer is: there are a wide range of warning signs that suggest the need for therapy. These include relationship dissatisfaction or distress, alcohol or drug abuse, feelings of loneliness, low mood, sexual difficulties, unexplained physical symptoms, or an inability to set or attain goals. Therapy can also be helpful when you are facing a transition in your life or have experienced a loss. We would suggest that if you are asking yourself if you need help, it would be a good idea to consult with a mental health professional. Seeking help is a sign of strength and can help prevent more serious problems down the road. Dont wait until you are desperate. If youre still not sure, ask the advice or friends or relatives that you trust, talk to others who have been in therapy, or speak to a health care provider. When you decide that it is time to seek help, select a therapist with professional credentials and experience. We accept referrals from health care providers; however, you can also contact us directly to book an appointment at 639 397 5800.
