50 days ... back in July I made a commitment to myself. That I would honour what I know keeps me grounded, balanced, centred and able to move through tough stressful days. I knew the fall would hit me like a ton of bricks and I needed a soulful practice rooted in place so that I would hold on to it. Too often when things get busy or stressful we tend to release what we need the most. I was determined not to. On Monday I hit my 50 day mark. 50 days of reading a daily inspirati...on to set my intentions for the day, 50 days of doing yoga and stretching my body, 50 days of meditating and breathing deeply. 50 days. Not all days were a long practice but they were a practice. I always found my way to the mat, to my breath, to my intention. As the fall is gently (or forcefully in my case) unfolding I’m holding on tighter to my commitment. The most effective way to give and take care of others is to give and take care of ourselves. Find what it is that you need. What grounds you, allows you to stop, breathe deeply, live soulfully and feel a sense of balance.. whatever it is honour yourself with it. This past weekend six amazing women stepped into the world of therapeutic children’s Yoga play with a mental health and emotional well-being focus. It was an intense and full weekend as we explored the anatomy, alignment, contraindications, yoga sutras, philosophy, therapeutic powers of play and sankalpas ... so much covered ... but it was embraced with great energy, openness, eagerness and a willingness to ...absorb everything they could to create the most effective and therapeutic children’s Yoga classes possible. In life and in my work with others you will often hear me say ‘skim off the fat’ ... the proverbial fat that sits on top ... the reaction to feelings we see and know. Be it anger, sadness, embarrassment, anxiety ... there is always something more that lies underneath this feeling. But it is the familiar emotion so we can sometimes get stuck there. When we take the time to ‘skim this fat off’ and see, feel and acknowledge what is underneath the feeling it becomes easier to man...age, understand and accept. I love how these umbrellas show exactly what I’ve been talking about in such a clear simple manner. And that yes, even positive feelings like happiness are the ‘fat on top’ and when we skim that off we can truly appreciate what lies within and beneath.
