What a year! Covid19 has been an unprecedented challenge to everyone. The economic and social disruption has been devastating. Safety guidelines imposed on our practice sessions have been tough. However, with the unwavering support of our students, their parents and our friends, our karate club in Peterborough continues to flourish. No words can express how critical your loyalty and support is and how much it is appreciated. Understandably, this is the first year that w...e won't be celebrating at Pizza Hut for Christmas. But our thoughts and best wishes will be with you during this "Festive Season". The following is an update on classes during December. Monday Night Only Practice At Mark Street United Church Gym (90 Hunter Street East, Peterborough, ON K9H 1G5) Class Size: Until Peterborough is back in the "Green Zone", class size at St. Mark's gym (Monday nights) is restricted to 10 people including the instructor (sensei). We're not accepting new students for the time being. Kids' Class Times: Monday nights from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Kids should be under "green belt". Adult Class Times: Monday nights from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. You should be a green belt or higher. Note: There are strict safety requirements in place --- you must wear a mask, you're required to sign in, social distancing is in effect, etc. So come early. The October virtual session will be two hours long. The Shintani Team is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. The workout will not have an age or rank requirement but please be aware the workout might be difficult for most kids under 12. However anyone interested in joining the team in the future should try to attend. ***

We had a great summer of training, hot though it was. Thank you everyone for attending the sessions, especially all you wonderful parents doing the drop off and pick ups. Although they may not say so, I know how much the kids appreciate the sacrifices that you make for them. Time has sped by and we’re now planning our Fall karate sessions. There have been a few minor changes, these being highlighted below. Introductory Class for kids aged 4 to 6 --- NEW Tuesdays and Thursd...ays from 6 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. (1/2 hour) For the first time, I’ll be running an introductory class for kids in the 4 to 6 age group. This will give them an opportunity to try-out karate. We keep the sessions at a fun level, the lessons being integrated with games to capture their interest. If you know any kids in this age group, please let the parents know about this new program. Regular Class For junior students age 7+ and senior students Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. (1 1/2 hours) As the nights are getting cooler, we recommend that all students wear their karate gi (uniform) with a T-shirt under the jacket. Don’t forget to bring your water bottle with you. Even though the evenings may get cool, the training will soon warm you up and you’ll cherish that drinking water. Although the evenings are getting darker earlier, the area that we practise in is lit up by floodlights from the adjoining baseball arena. We’ll continue to work outdoors as long as the weather and lighting permits, until such time we have to switch back to online ZOOM sessions or an indoor facility (Covid regulations permitting). We’ll advise you when any changes become necessary. September --- Introductory free month for new students --- NEW If you have friends or family members who are interested in trying out karate, do invite them to come and practise with us during our free month --- September. They won’t need a karate gi (uniform). Sweat- pants and a T-shirt / light jacket will suffice. Registration with Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation (SWKKF) --- NEW There has been a change in the manner students are required to register with the SWKKF. In the past, I handled the registration including forwarding your required annual fees. From now on, you are required to register directly online with the SWKKF. The URL for the SWKKF website is www.shintani.ca. Please remember that all students are required to register in order to participate in our regular karate training sessions. Outdoor Training Location --- James Stevenson Park Outdoor training sessions will continue at James Stevenson Park (East City, Peterborough).
