Peterborough Police targeted distracting driving and view obstructed offences During a three day plain clothes detail more than 100 charges were laid relating to distracted driving and view obstructed offences. This is an incredibly high number of charges in such a short period of time. It is very concerning as we know that every year in Ontario distracted driving fatalities continue to surpass deaths caused by drunk driving or speeding, says Sgt. Peter Sejrup, with the Tra...ffic Services Unit. The detail, held February 13, 14 and 15, involved unique plain clothes techniques to help in detecting distracted driving and view obstructed offences at various locations within the City. Officers were either in an unmarked vehicle, or posing as pedestrians walking on the sidewalks and crossing at intersections, making observations and calling out offences to waiting uniform officers. During this short time period, 106 charges were laid in relation to these offences, with a significant number of them occurring while drivers were stopped at, or approaching, a red light. Sgt. Sejrup reminds drivers that, simply holding the device while driving a motor vehicle is an offence. The only way to call or text safely, and legally, is to pull over, put the motor vehicle in park, then pick up your device, Being stopped at a red light or a stop sign does not provide a legal opportunity to text, call or program your GPS. Sgt. Sejrup notes that wearable devices are also included and cautions motorists not to check their calories burned, or read/send an email while driving. These unique enforcement techniques are necessary to help enforce the Highway Traffic Act to ensure our roads are as safe as possible, says Sgt. Sejrup. Leave the phone alone, save $500, and possibly a life. Be a Zero Hero and commit to zero calls and texts while driving. This directed patrol campaign continues for the month of February, along with the other regular duties and enforcement initiatives. https://ptbo.com//peterborough-police-targeting-distracti/

Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, and Jeff Leal, MPP for Peterborough, were at the future site of the new long-term care home today to make the announcement. The new home will be part of the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen's plan to create a health campus which will also include affordable and supportive housing for families and people of all ages. As part of Ontario's commitment to create 5,000 long-term care beds over the next four years and more than 30,000 over the next decade, the province is now inviting existing or new long-term care organizations to apply for new beds in their communities. This investment is part of Aging with Confidence: Ontario's Action Plan for Seniors, which has more than 20 new initiatives to help seniors access the supports they need. The plan includes 15 million more hours of nursing, personal support and therapeutic care for long-term care home residents - a free annual high-dose influenza vaccine for seniors - and a new one-stop website where seniors can find information about tax credits, drug coverage, powers of attorney, recreation programs and more. Winter Parking Restrictions on City Streets To assist snow clearing operations, winter parking restrictions are now in effect in the City of Peterborough. To avoid tickets and/or your vehicle being towed, observe the following:... From December 1st to April 1st, parking is prohibited on all City streets from 2:00 a.m. 6:00 a.m. This allows better snow clearing of city streets and at a lower cost because equipment will not have to return to clear areas where vehicles were parked. The fine for a violation is $25. During a snowstorm, when snow-clearing operations are underway, no stopping of a vehicle is permitted on any city street. Clearing operations typically take place between midnight and 8 a.m. The fine is $80 for this violation and your vehicle will be towed. All vehicles will be towed to Morrow Park and must be claimed the following day. After 24hrs all unclaimed vehicles will be towed to an impound yard at the owners expense. For more information, please call the Parking Division at 705-742-7777 ext. 2802 Remember there is no parking any time of the year on city streets for longer than 3 hours, except where a sign indicates otherwise. https://ptbo.com//winter-parking-restrictions-on-city-str/
