Peterborough Pulse 14.10.2020

We hope this message finds you well during these trying times. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this crisis, and we thank all the front-line workers in multiple industries who continue to ensure our safety and security. Peterborough Pulse has made the decision to cancel this year’s Open Streets event in light of the evolving COVID19 pandemic, and the implications it has for large gatherings. We know Peterborough Pulse means a lot to many people and it hurts to have t...o send this message out, but ultimately the safety of our attendees, activity leaders, artists, volunteers, staff, sponsors, partners and community comes first. We appreciate your support during this very challenging time and believe that this is the best decision for everyone. Pulse wouldn’t exist without our beautiful and resilient Peterborough community. Thank you for helping us re-imagine the possibilities of what a city can be. Pulse will be using its Facebook channel to spotlight feel-good community actions that bring us all together- even when apart. Until then, we wish everyone good health and happiness while we collectively get this challenging time together.

If it wasn't for COVID-19, this weekend we'd be celebrating the community with the 6th annual Peterborough Pulse. We are sad to cancel this year's celebration, and yet we can't help but notice that even during these difficult times we are actually appreciating (in a different way) so much of what Pulse celebrates. The goal of Pulse is to inspire Peterborough to become the healthiest and happiest city it can be. Pulse is a celebration of opening the streets as spaces for peopl...e walking, biking, skateboarding, rolling, etc. In collaboration with PtboHealth and DBIA, the City of Peterborough has begun opening key downtown streets to allow for better physical distancing. Open streets are healthy streets. We are proud of these measures and everything we are all doing together (apart) to keep each other healthy as we enjoy the wonderful shops, restaurants, and services in our vibrant downtown community. This won't replace our super fun open streets event, but at least it'll get you thinking about how to make Peterborough more bike friendly every day of the year. There is an interactive map and a survey that are pretty engaging.

A beautiful Pay What You Can community plant shop has popped up in the city to help folks accessibly get their green thumb on during isolation. See details below for more information ~ Community Planter Launch~... This is our second year of starting plants from seed and the first year using seeds harvested from last years plants sown. Normally this would be shared with pals and neighbours but starting too many from seed in COVID days led to the Community Planter. Built from excess pallet wood, this planter holds seed started with the intention of sharing with the neighbourhood. There is a donation bin which goes back into the planter. ALL of the containers used were scavenged LAST YEAR either from previous work sites Alex was working on (other peoples To-Go cups) or from recycle bins around May 24 weekend last year and reused again for a second season! None of them purchased. Soil mix used has compost we made from our food scraps too! Full circle Random Acts of Green! Much credit also goes to Alexander Salmon for making this happen. ------ Donations of small/medium sized cups would be welcome to continue the project. There are seedlings and potted seedlings available for pickup. These need water + light to keep thriving. Do not leave them out overnight or transplant into the ground until closer to June. There are tomatos, peppers, houseplants, and later there will be herbs, flowers. Space for seed swapping. We will be keeping the planter out all season for other plant trades and to share the tomato bounty when the fruits come in.

In this week's column from Peterborough Green Up, Jaime Akiyama and the Transportation and Urban Design team provide some guidance for how you can cycle safely during the COVID-19 pandemic, share resources available at the Peterborough Moves website, and explain where you can get your bike repaired in downtown Peterborough. The health and safety of our community is paramount. Peterborough Pulse is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will carefully follow the recommendations of our public health experts. We’re staying optimistic and are still planning for Peterborough Pulse on July 18th, but are also in the process of making contingency plans in the event Pulse needs to be postponed to a later date- or cancelled entirely. For now, the Pulse team will continue with the coordination eff...ort behind the scenes during this challenging and unprecedented time. Along with so many other Peterboroughians, we are working from home as a preventive measure to counter the spread of COVID-19. Everyone must a do their bit to #flattenthecurve. Right now, you are the best chance we have at beating this virus! While you may not feel sick, we ask that you be mindful of those most vulnerable in our community. You can help prevent the spread of #COVID19 by practicing #SocialDistancing and listening to the advice of our Public Health officials. During this difficult time, we will be using this channel to spotlight feel-good community actions that bring us all together- even when apart. Pulse wouldn’t exist without our beautiful and resilient Peterborough community. Thank you for helping us reimagine the possibilities of what a city can be.
