WARNING: FOUL LANGUAGE AND FOUL PLAY - POACHING ON THE FRASER RIVER This is the harsh, unnecessary and sad reality on the Fraser River. This gillnet killed reproducing chum and chinook salmon as well as juvenile sturgeon. There is a a clear lack of leadership from government and in river monitors. The river is currently closed to all salmon fishing due to extreme concerns for some stocks. This illegal gillnet on the Fraser River this week is a common site. Even with limited... enforcement, hundreds of illegal gillnets have been confiscated by the DF0 in 2020 during historic lows of sockeye, steellhead and early timed chinook. Faith has been lost in this Liberal government to address this epidemic on the Fraser. Without robust enforcement and significant consequence, the killing will continue. Where are the politicians to address this continued appalling activity? The Government of Canada and DFO Need a Wake Up Call The lack of competency and unfair, one-sided political decisions continue to put British Columbia’s Chinook salmon in jeopardy. Time is of the essence with the upcoming election we need to start pressing our electoral candidates for answers on: Chinook fishing opportunities to help coastal and local businesses. Pressure needs to be put on DFO and the federal government to adipose fin mark all current hatchery Chinook salmon and allow anglers to harvest them. Northern BC has seen dismal steelhead returns this year. What resources and funding is the provincial government going to offer?... Interior Fraser Chinook and Thompson River steelhead recovery plan is needed. The clock is rapidly ticking, window dressing and political posturing is not assisting these stocks, we need tangible action now. Please take the time to contact your MLA while salmon are a federal responsibility we need our provincial leaders to be leaders not only in recovery but also in allowing access to resources so important to B.C.

Please take the time to review the video from Rodney Hsu on his frustrations with the current state of our fisheries and their management. He is not alone, there are many public fishers that are at their wits end with DFO. Political change is the only answer and your MP needs to hear from you. Canadian citizens are fed up with the actions and inactions of this Government. Please contact your local MP. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r9EotvQUU8Y... Fraser River Demonstration Fishery - Wednesday, September 9th Urgent Notice: Over the past several years the FRSA and member organizations individually and through the Sport Fish Advisory Board have tried to secure a selective bar fishery on the Fraser River. Despite our attempts to work with DFO staff this request continues to be denied. This method of angling has proven to be truly selective and is an important part of our fishing heritage. A recent request to access health...y runs of late chinook in river was again denied despite openings at the mouth & on-going net fisheries. To further demonstrate our ability to fish selectively the FRSA and member organizations have arranged a Demonstration fishery to be held Sept 9th to further document our valid requests for equitable opportunity. If you are concerned about the angling opportunities for your future generations please attend this event to be launched from Island 22 boat launch Wed Sept 9th. Boat transportation will be provided to designated fishing areas where possible. Please ensure you have a valid fresh water license and be at the launch at 7:30 AM for further details. All participants will be expected to act respectfully toward any DFO staff and other sectors on the river. This is not a protest!! Lets demonstrate we can be respectful while demanding equitable opportunities going forward. Please follow Covid 19 guidelines and socially distance.

Critically endangered runs of Steelhead, Chinook, Coho and Sockeye all a mismanagement folly that needs to change! A lack of monitoring and negligent enforcement are not benefiting any fishers. On June 23rd, 2020 the Pacific Salmon Commissions Whonnock Sockeye Salmon gillnet test fishery began operations for the 2020 season. The by-catch of chinook to date in 2020 has been encouraging. To date,118 chinook have been caught in 2020. Thats 80 more than 2019 and 103 more chinook then 2016 to July 13th, 2020. That is hardly the lowest on record for this time period that DFO notice on June 30th claims. The PSC Whonnock test fishery is located a few kilometers up riv...er from the DFO Albion Chinook test fishery. The dredging that occurs in the lower Fraser where the Albion is located and the high water from increased snow pack has impacted the Albion gillnets ability to catch fish. As seen on the run timing graph many of these fish caught will be spring and summer 5-2s. With the cautiously optimistic endangered chinook numbers entering the Fraser River daily, it is crucial that as many fish as possible make it past the Big Bar Slide. It is also of utmost importance that DFO has accurate catch statistics in river catch, clearly there are issues. The Whonnock test fishery recently caught 8 chinook in a 20 min set, while the Albion continues to show the lowest catches on record. Here are a couple of graphs that are based on the data obtained from the Pacific Salmon Commissions website over the last few weeks. Lets hope the encouraging numbers of endangered Fraser Chinook continue and survive their challenging upstream migration. Please sign and share with others. PUBLIC FISHERY ALLIANCE INFORMATION RALLY This is a call to action! On Monday, July 6th from 12:00pm-1:30pm join us in a peaceful information rally at the downtown DFO office located at 401 Burrard Street in Vancouver. We are rallying together because... 1. Closing the public chinook fishery is not a recovery plan! If the Government of Canada and DFO were truly concerned about pacific wild salmon, DFO would have already implemented a detailed recovery plan for certain stocks of endangered Fraser River chinook salmon. DFO has known of these stocks of concern for more than 15 years but have made little if any investment in their recovery, instead placing that burden on public fisheries. Restricting and closing public access to chinook is NOT a recovery plan. 2. All chinook currently raised in hatcheries MUST be adipose clipped! At this time only 10% of hatchery chinook are marked (marked means anglers can identify hatchery fish because the adipose fin has been removed prior to release from the hatchery). We are asking that all chinook currently raised in hatcheries be adipose clipped. The precedent for using adipose clipped salmon for part of a broad-based recovery plan has been established, as the public can currently retain adipose clipped coho salmon. This allows selective retention of hatchery coho while releasing wild fish to protect stocks of concern where necessary. This strategy should be applied to hatchery chinook salmon as well! Adipose clipping hatchery reared chinook for retention allows significantly more wild chinook to return to their rivers to spawn because they can be released if encountered in the public fishery. This management approach can accelerate the recovery of chinook stocks of concern while sustaining important public fisheries up and down the coast of British Columbia. Please join us in our rally to support a recovery plan for chinook stocks of concern and the mass marking of all chinook salmon! Date: Monday, July 6th Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm Location: 401 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC (on the corner of Burrard and W Hastings) PFA Information Rally Code of Conduct & Covid Protocol Participants will remain respectful of the general public as well as public/private property. DFO IS A FAILED AGENCY THAT NO LONGER MANAGES FOR THE WELL-BEING OF FISH OR THE PUBLIC INTEREST If the Government of Canada and DFO were truly concerned about fish, DFO would have a recovery plan for these endangered salmon Thank you to the BCWF for this letter. These are some very powerful words from a well-respected, longtime hunting and fishing organization. The list of those outraged by the recent closure continues to grow exponentially. While yes this closure is outr...ageous, we must acknowledge this letter points out there has been no leadership in trying to rebuild fish stocks such as Interior Coho, Chinook and Steelhead that have been in decline for decades. We want real action to address the limiting factors on these stocks so they can recover and benefit all Canadians, present and future - just banning fishing does not accomplish this. DOES THE MINISTER UNDERSTAND???? Is the BC Public Fishery even on the Fisheries Minsters radar?? It is clear by her comments last week that she is not in touch with the issues facing the Public Fishery on the West Coast. Very concerning and seemingly insincere responses from our Minister. Does she understand the issues, specifically when it comes to Mass Marking? Thanks to Ed Fast for pressing the Minister. We need leadership that is in touch with British Columbia and the is...sues that the coast is facing. We support sustainable opportunities to harvest chinook and support science based management measures to conserve stocks of concern. The Minister touched on her concerns with Mass Marking below.?? 1. Concerns over genetic diversity? There is not an ask to produce more hatchery fish, simply an ask to mark 100 percent of the chinook produced in Canadian Federal Hatcheries. 2. Marked selective pilot projects underway for chinook? Where? When? 3. Sport Fishing Association? Surely she meant the hard work done by the Sport Fishing Advisory Board. 4. Concerns over data collection? With tens of thousands of samples collected in recent years by volunteers in the Public Fishery, there is a safe path forward. We are very supportive of further contributions to collect data. We urge everyone that is concerned with the Public Fishery and salmon in general to reach out to Minister Bernadette Jordan and your local MPs and share your concerns. VEDDER RIVER CLOSED TO SALMON FISHING Tick tock, tick tock, time is running out. July 1st has been the opening day for access to the sustainable summer chinook fishery on the Chilliwack/Vedder river for years. DFO failed to open the Chehalis river on June 1st and has provided zero correspondence to the public of the reasoning or future plans. We are now left wondering whether or not they will keep the Chilliwack/Vedder river closed to fishing as well. Ask them why these fisheries are currently closed. Fishing is deemed an essential service in B.C. and is recognized as a significant economic contributor. Ask DFO why we are being shut out? Once again you are being denied access to a Public Fishery. Sadly, the Chehalis River is now closed to Salmon fishing. This river typically opens up to recreational fishing for Chinook on June 1. DFO reviewed all region 2 river salmon fisheries and did a blanket closure on all rivers with openings occurring in season. http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca//rec/fresh-d/region2-eng.html Well DFO, once again youre dropping the ball. This is a great video showing a path forward from non-discriminatory in river gill nets. This type of change in fishing practice would help benefit critically endangered Interior Fraser Steelhead and endangered Sturgeon while still allowing fisheries to occur on healthy stocks. It also exemplifies the need for DFO to start marking ALL hatchery-raised Chinook and Coho for both ocean and river fisheries as well as better stock composition data. It is very disappointing to no...te that there were multiple proposals for such traps to be built on the Fraser River as well as the Harrison river applied through the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund, a program funded jointly by the federal and provincial government were all rejected funding! The Public Fishery Alliance encourages its members to write your MP or MLA and let them know that it is time for more selective fishing practices non-selective gill nets are no longer viable. We encourage you to join our growing collective voice to support and fight for access to sustainable public fisheries. https://publicfisheryalliance.ca/membership-sign-up/ Visit our blog: https://publicfisheryalliance.ca/blog/ https://m.youtube.com/watch
