This is Métis Sash by Eric Ouimet. Growing up one of my favourite times of year was the Festival du Voyageur. Having a French Canadian/Métis background, this was a time to put on your ceinture fléchée (sash) and enjoy the week’s festivities. Each of the colours on the sash hold specific meanings. Red/white are the colours of the Métis hunting flag. Blue/white are the colours of the Métis flag. Green and yellow represent fertility, growth and prosperity of the Nation and B...lack represents suppression and dispossession of Métis land during the dark period after 1870. We are presenting this piece as part of a series of works by our resident artists which we have entitled Resilience. My map series began as a study in grief over the loss of my partner. The maps of the North really spoke to me as it is suffering loss through climate change and the inhabitants must adapt to survive. I have always loved maps as a tool to visualize where I have been and where I am in the present. They came to represent my search for a new way, a path, a destination. Suddenly through this artistic exploration I was in love with my place here once again. You can see these and many more of Kathleen's work at the gallery now!
