AFTER RECENTLY SHARING A POST OF A NEAR VICTORY BY THE SIKH ARMY AGAINST THE MIGHTY BRITISH IN 1845 AT THE BATTLE OF FEROZESHAH, I AM PROUD TO SHARE THE HISTOR...Y OF AN ACTUAL VICTORY BY THE SIKH ARMY AGAINST THE MIGHTIEST POWER OF THAT TIME!!! THE BATTLE OF CHILLIANWALA EPITOMISED THE INDOMITABLE SIKH SPIRIT OF CHARDHI KALA AND SHOWED THE WORLD THAT INSPITE OF THE BEST EFFORTS OF THE STRONGEST ENEMY AND COUNTLESS TRAITORS, THE KHALSA REMAINED UNAFFECTED AND RESILIENT. HOW MANY PUNJABIS KNOW THAT THE BRITISH CONSIDERED IT ONE OF THE TOUGHEST BATTLES IN THEIR HISTORY AND THAT THE PUNJABI WARRIORS OF SHER SINGHS ARMY CAUSED ONE OF THE RARE OCCASIONS IN WHICH A NON EUROPEAN FORCE BEAT A EUROPEAN ADVERSARY DURING THOSE TIMES!!! 1853 India. Raja Sher Singh Attariwalla General Sher Singh was a royal military commander and a member of the Sikh nobility during the period of the Sikh Empire in the mid-19th century in the Punjab. He commanded the Sikh Khalsa Army in the Second Anglo-Sikh War against the British East India Company. His father was General Chattar Singh Attariwalla. General Sher Singh and the army, under his command, gave a devastating blow to the British Army at Chillianwala. Under his command the Sikh Khalsa Army managed to successfully defend its position against a British army at the Battle of Chillianwala. Both armies retreated after the battle, with both sides claiming victory, although it became clear after the rains subsided that the Sikhs had defeated the British. It was one of the hardest fought battles in the British Army's history. The loss of British prestige at Chillianwala was one of the factors that contributed to the Indian Rebellion some nine years later. Within the British Army, such was the consternation over the events at Chillianwalah that, after the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade, when Lord Lucan remarked "This is a most serious matter", General Airey replied, "It is nothing to Chillianwalah." With the establishment of British control, Sher Singh Attariwalla was forced into exile from the Punjab. The British feared that such a powerful leader could reignite a full-scale war with them. Sher Singh died in exile, at Benares (Varanasi) in 1858, away from his Punjabi homeland. Text - Wikipedia. Portrait Colesworthy Grant, Calcutta. 1853 Wikimedia commons. Foreign Relations between King Louis Philippe of France and Maharajah Ranjit Singh. It is no secret that the French had a massive influence on the Sikh kingdom... due to mercenaries such as Allard, Argoud, Court and Ventura. King Louis Philippe and Maharajah Ranjit Singh had a long distance friendship and very cordial relations. Louis Philippe was first introduced to the Sikh kingdom by General Ventura who had brought some indo-Greek coins as a gift to the French king. Maharajah Ranjit Singh also sent a portrait to king Louis Philippe. When Allard returned to France in 1836 on leave, Louis Philippe sent a letter to Maharajah Ranjit Singh stating that although long distances and oceans separate the kingdoms of Punjab and France, there is no bar to the love that binds us together. He referred to maharajah Ranjit Singh as a brave and fearless leader. Louis Philippe appointed Allard as the French representative in Lahore. In the coming years, gifts would be exchanged, such as gold, spices and paintings coming from Punjab and arms and armour coming from France. See more
