Hello Friends COVID-19 update Messaging continues to focus on our need to hold off spread of the more contagious variants, while we are moving through our vaccination program. This will give us time to better understand transmission of the variants and reduce the risk of additional mutations. Bonnie Henry spoke about the intention to ease restrictions when we have seen fewer cases and when we have a better understanding of where our variants are spreading and where they... originated from. As of the last update on BCs variant cases there had been 40, with only 3 still known to be active. The belief is that none of them have lead to community spread and that they have been contained. More research is being done on the effectiveness of masks vs double masks. The CDC reported that when spaced 6 feet apart, wearing one mask blocks about 40% of particles being inhaled. When a cloth mask was worn on top of a surgical mask that improved to 80%. When both parties are wearing double masks more than 95% of the particles are blocked. This is because the cloth masks tightens the gaps around the masks edges that let virus particles in. Some countries have started to recommend wearing double masks, Canada has not adjusted our recommendations. This week Health Canada approved that they will extract six doses from Pfizer vaccine vials, which had previously been under question. Most of the COVID vaccinations that are being delivered in BC right now are second doses as we wait for more supply to arrive. It is anticipated that we will have more availability in March, April and May. Advancing our vaccination program is another key element in being able to relax current restrictions. Going into the long weekend we are still being asked to only socialize with members of our immediate house holds. Cases across BC continue to drop and Vancouver Island cases remain near 27 a day. Island Health News released an update related to the increasing cases in Central Vancouver Island, particularly the Greater Nanaimo area. This is where the majority of our Island cases are. https://www.islandhealth.ca//central-island-continues-pace Local Health Area Maps and BCCDC dashboards Local Health Area map for Jan 31 to Feb 6: http://www.bccdc.ca//cas/covid19_lha_20210131_20210206.png Health Service Delivery Area Jan 29 to Feb 4: http://www.bccdc.ca//covid19_hsda_cumulative_7days_2021020 Links to all of the BCCDC COVID dashboards can be found here: http://www.bccdc.ca/healt/diseases-conditions/covid-19/data Daily Island Health Dashboard: https://www.islandhealth.ca//public-health-covid19-daily-d
