Frozen Shoulder Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis presents as stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint, therefore significantly limiting the Range of Motion (ROM) of the shoulder. Attempts of moving the shoulder or performing exercises on land can be quite difficult and painful! Studies have shown that the properties of water, especially buoyancy allow for ease of movement and over time improving shoulder flexion, extension, abduction and adduction. The viscosity ...of the water acts like a natural resistance to increase muscle strength once ROM is restored. Tools such as the pool noodle can be used to work on ROM and strength in ways you would have never thought possible! Want to know more how aqua therapy can help you! Arthritis - Did you know that one of the treatments for arthritis is exercise! I know it’s hard to believe that movement will help with arthritis pain. Studies have shown that exercise reduces pain, maintains muscle strength around affected joints, reduces joint stiffness, prevents functional decline and improves mental health and quality of life. Although high intensity workouts are contraindicated due to acute inflammation, that doesn’t mean all types of exercises a...re out of the question. On days with a flare up, easy range of motion (ROM) exercises can be completed while lying down to keep the joints moving and limber. Another great way to move on days with a flare up or any day really, is water exercise and it is quite often recommended to patients with arthritis. Scientific studies following individuals with arthritis and fibromyalgia completing aquatic exercises also showed improvement in ROM, reduced disability and improved functional fitness! Post Stroke Stroke can affect everybody differently, there are mild, moderate and severe cases that can affect physical, cognitive and mental abilities. Studies have shown that aqua therapy can help physically rehabilitate after having a stroke. Muscle Relaxation - muscle spasticity is common in post stroke patients, causing limited Range of Motion (ROM) and pain. Warm water pool or hot tub can help relax muscles, reduce tension and stimulate the body to release endorphi...ns (body’s natural painkillers) Improve Mobility, Strength and Coordination- it is often seen post stroke that one side of the body is more affected than the other side. There can be limited ROM and strength on one side vs. the other. Decreased coordination can be noted especially when walking with lack of arm swing or inability to swing opposite arm and leg. The natural buoyancy and resistance of the water can be used to stretch and strengthen muscles in a safe environment. Balance - is another component that can be affected by a stroke. Like mentioned previously, the water is a safe environment for balance training and gives the clients more confidence knowing that they can’t fall and hurt themselves. Exercises can be progressed by adding water perturbations and body movement to increase difficulty. Centennial Pool Update Thank you to everyone who reached out to me about the Centennial Pool opening back up! Yes, it’s true! The pool is opening on Tuesday September 8th!! There are new protocols that have been put in place to keep all parties safe during this pandemic. One of them being that independent contractors such as myself are unable to work with our clients in Phase I of reopening, to allow for staff and patrons time to adjust to the new procedures. ... Phase II will be implemented closer to October, allowing for independent contractors to start seeing clients again. There is no clear picture as to the protocols and restrictions that will be in place for Phase II. At this time. Thank you for your patience during this process, everyday seems to bring new challenges and I am continually working to find the best solutions! Remember I am currently available to see clients @lemonade_collective Both pool and gym appointments are available! @lightandshadowphoto #AquaTherapy #PoolTime #RegisteredKinesiologist #WithAKinYouCan #AKinCanHelp #SouthGeorgianBay #Collingwood #WasagaBeach #Stayner #Nottawa #BlueMountain #Clarksburg #Thornbury #Meaford See more

What goes down, must come up? Yes, you read that correctly. Think back to our last post when we tried to put a beach ball at the bottom of the pool, it always wanted to shoot straight back up, because of the buoyancy. Remember back to grade school and learning about gravity? Gravity is what keeps us on the ground. We need gravity to live, but it is also pulling down on us at all times. For someone with arthritis, they can really feel the affects of gravity on the low ...back, hips and knees. Buoyancy counteracts gravity and allows the body to feel almost weightless, like you're in space! Want to learn more about how aqua therapy can help you? Send us a DM or give us a call! #AquaTherapy #Buoyancy #PropertiesOfWater #Gravity #AKinCanHelp #WithAKinYouCan #Registered Kinesiologist #Kinstagram #MovementBeyondYourLimits #MotionIsLotion #Collingwood #WasagaBeach #Stayner #Nottawa #BlueMountain #Clarksburg #Thornbury #Meaford #SouthGeorgianBay @ South Georgian Bay See more

Property of Water Series Think back to when you were a kid and wanted to get the beach ball on the bottom of the pool. It would always want to shoot back up and pop out of the water. That upward force on the ball is the buoyancy force. In aqua therapy it can be used in a variety of ways: - Weightless of the body in a floating position (pictured) - Making exercises easier with assisting the movement... - Or the opposite can be done and making an exercise harder by using buoyancy as resistance. This can benefit individuals who have chronic low back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, difficulty walking, mobility issues plus so much more! Are you or somebody you know interested in aqua therapy? Send us a DM to get all your aqua therapy questions answered. Tune in for more information about the properties of water! @lightandshadowphoto #AquaTherapy #Buoyancy #PropertiesOfWater #AKinCanHelp #WithAKinYouCan #Registered Kinesiologist #Kinstagram #MovementBeyondYourLimits #MotionIsLotion #Collingwood #WasagaBeach #Stayner #Nottawa #BlueMountain #Clarksburg #Thornbury #Meaford #SouthGeorgianBay See more

This rounds out the top questions asked about Kinesiology (kin). Am I covered by health insurance? Maybe? Every insurance company is different and they are slowly adding Kinesiology into their paramedical coverage. If you want it covered, it’s something to talk your insurance company or to your employer about adding it. If you have a health spending account, consider using that towards some kin sessions! ... #AKinCanHelp #WithAKinYouCan #Kinesiology #RegisteredKinesiologist #AquaTherapy #Rehabilitation #InsuranceCoverage #Collingwood #WasagaBeach #Stayner #Nottawa #BlueMountain #Clarksburg #Thornbury #Meaford #SouthGeorgianBay See more

Another common question that I get asked is how did you get into kinesiology? Well, that is a long story. If you want to hear the whole thing, check out the interview I gave for @makingkinnectionspodcast (link in bio). But here is the spark note version: * Human Kinetics Undergraduate Degree from University of Guelph... * Took time off after graduating as most do, worked at an office job and realized I couldn’t sit all day long * Post-graduate certificate from Humber College in Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management (not required to write the Kinesiology board exam). * Wrote and passed the Kin exam! * Worked in a rehabilitation clinic for 3 years * Started my own business with a clinical focus on aqua therapy May 2019 @lightandshadowphoto #AKinCanHelp #WithAKinYouCan #Kinesiology #RegisteredKinesiologist #MotionIsLotion #AquaTherapy #Rehabilitation #Collingwood #WasagaBeach #Stayner #Nottawa #BlueMountains #Clarksburg #Thornbury #Meaford #SouthGeorgianBay See more

Kinesiology is a very versatile profession, but it is still not widely recognized by insurance companies, some healthcare practitioners and even the general public. Let’s change that! So now that we know what a Kinesiologist (kin) isn’t (from the other day). I bet you didn’t know that kins can work in a variety of areas such as: * Rehabilitation (including prehab and aqua therapy)... * Ergonomics (office, large industry, etc.) * Athletic Performance * Health Promotion * Corporate Wellness * Cardiac Rehabilitaiton * Long Term Care * Disability Management * Home Care * Neuro Rehabilitation * Chronic Disease and Pain Management * Research/Education They can even own their own business and be successful at it! #AKinCanHelp #WithAKinYouCan #Kinesiology #RegisteredKinesiologist #AquaTherapy #Rehabilitation #BusinessOwner #Collingwood #WasagaBeach #Stayner #Nottawa #BlueMountain #Clarksburg #Thornbury #Meaford #SouthGeorgianBay @bfresh.media See more

All very common questions that are asked! 1. A kinesiologist (kin) can work as a personal trainer if they choose to, but will have a larger scope of practice, meaning they can see people with chronic conditions, injuries, etc. Whereas a personal trainer’s scope is limited to healthy individuals. ... 2. Physiotherapists (physios) and kinesiologists are again similar, but different. A physio can diagnose an injury or condition, and have a 2 year Masters program. A student who has finished their undergraduate degree can immediately write the board exam upon graduation to become a kinesiologist. There are some kins who take continuing education can learn hands on and massage techniques. I personally don’t want to blur the lines between a physio and a kin and choose to mainly use exercise and very limited hands on techniques to treat. 3. Again, a kin can work as a physiotherapy assistant (PTA) if they choose. It is quite often a kin’s first job after finishing school. It is always a learning experience, but kins can offer so much more! Stay tuned for more kin related questions this week! #AKinCanHelp #RegisteredKinesiologist #WithAKinYouCan #Collingwood #WasagaBeach #Stayner #Nottawa #BlueMountains #Clarksburg #Thornbury #Meaford #SouthGeorgianBay See more
