It’s Orange Shirt day again, So this year I asked my son, Why are you wearing an orange shirt to school? He thought about it for a second and said. Some girl... went to school a long time ago and wasn’t allowed to wear her orange shirt, and she really liked it, so we wear ours now to say that we can wear whatever we want. It made me think, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about what he said. How hard is it for non-first nation’s teachers, or any teachers for that matter, to tackle the reality of orange shirt day? How often does the message get mixed into anti bullying or other messages? I see shirts all over that say Every child matters But shouldn’t they say, Indigenous children matter? Residential school is a big thing for anyone to learn about, let alone kids. My entire family has been, and was, directly affected by residential school. Yet, I didn’t even know what it was until I was in my twenties. So much sadness, so much anger, so much depression, and repressed feelings, that my own family wouldn’t tell me what happened until I was old enough to ask questions. I hold my kids close every day, because I know less than 50 years ago they’d have been taken from me and sent to one of these schools, either Port Alberni, Kuper Island, or Mission. I even know the schools they would have gone to, because my relatives all went to these places. And if the school wasn’t bad enough many kids brought it home. The verbal, mental, physical, and sexual abuse didn’t just take place in these schools; it came home to the reserves where it was proliferated. The brothers and sisters who didn’t go to school suffered from the broken behaviours of their siblings who did attend these schools. And those who suffered second hand consequences will never be compensated. The child with broken parents, the niece with an abusive uncle, the grandparents of broken grandchildren, the community with corrupt leaders, the list goes on and on, and these far reaching consequences are still everywhere on reserve. I don’t know a single first nations person who can say they are currently unaffected by residential school. So when you wear your shirt and snap a selfie, think of this painting aptly named the scream, and remember what that shirt represents. It represents the ongoing struggle of first nations people under the rule of Canada and that struggle is far from over. Here are some facts for you to think about while you wear your orange shirt. Odds of dying at residential school 1 in 25 Odd of dying as a Canadian in ww2 1 in 26 Aproximately 150,000 children went through the residential school system Currently over 300,000 first nations kids are in care across Canada First nations are 4% of the population, yet we are 56% of the kids in care 30% of the people in prison The average yearly income of a first nations person in Canada is $19,000 Have a suicide rate almost 6 times the nations average And only 0.2% of Canada is first nations reserve land Hwutus nu shqwaluwun My feelings are heavy Kwululualus Orange Hwiuneem Listen Tth’iqwum Please Smuneem Children Oh God! Like the thunderbird of old I shall rise again out of the sea; I shall grab the instruments of the white man's success his education, his skills, and with these new tools I shall build my race into the proudest segment of your society.
