WE FEEL - WE SERVE Patients Welfare Association (Dow Medical College and Civil Hospital Karachi) is a medical student-run patient support and advocacy charitable organization. Started in 1978 (officially registered in 1979), this organization has been working seamlessly since its inception. What started as hectic running around to find healthy blood donors within unsuspecting medical students and use of pocket money, supported by one or two business donors (mostly related to ...Dr. Inayat Thaver and Mohammad Iqbal Jakwani,) slowly became one of the major charities of Pakistan and certainly the first student-run charity in Pakistan operating from a medical school. Generations of medical students working with PWA and then graduating from Dow Medical College have developed an enhanced sense of medical volunteerism. The organization became a training ground for medical leadership and volunteerism. For years we survived the use of borrowed space in CHK blood bank to use their storage system to screen and keep our "healthy blood", alongside the commercially bought blood from the professional blood donors who were often seen lined up outside the government-run blood bank to donate blood. In the beginning, much of this work was done after school hours and sometimes during the night duties. Through the course of history, PWA created its own blood bank (Thanks to Dr. Syed Sajjad Hussain, the then DMS of Civil Hospital Karachi for alloting the physical space). During many years that followed, PWA set up a blood fractionation unit, A tuberculosis treatment clinic, a laboratory and an ECG service. The last major expansion was the Thalassemia Centre). Some of these services have been withdrawn due to the availability of government-run facilities. However, work of Blood Bank has gone up (~400 bags of free screened blood per day) and increased workload on the Thalassemia Centre. Multiple factors have cause doubling up of cost with no increase in the funding. The current Board of Directors has therefore sent out an urgent appeal for help. I am requesting all humanitarian hearts and all PWA alumni and friends help. Dow graduates and others are being encouraged to join local Alumni in UK, USA, Canada and the Middle East who will be working with local charities to support this cause. If you are not in dire need of charitable receipts, you can send a direct transfer. Information is contained at the end of this video.
