It's that time of the year again! Within the next week or so, Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds will be completing their spring migration and arriving in Manitoba! If you plan on putting up feeders to attract hummingbirds, here are a few tips to keep your hummingbirds happy and safe: - You can make your own nectar solution by mixing cup of white table sugar per cup of water. You can boil the solution (especially if you're planning on storing the solution in the refrigerator for a ...few days) but please make sure the solution has cooled off before refilling your feeders - Avoid adding red food colouring to sugar water, or using red-coloured commercial mixes. It's the colour of the flowers/feeder that attract the hummingbirds, not the colour of the nectar, and the food dye may be harmful to hummingbirds - Make sure to clean your feeder frequently, especially in hot weather. If the solution becomes cloudy or mould forms, it's time to clean that feeder! Ideally, feeders should be cleaned every 3 to 5 days to prevent mould and deadly fermentation, and more frequently during hot weather. Clean your feeders using hot water and a brush or you can use a a dilute bleach or vinegar mixture but please make sure to rinse the feeders thoroughly and allow them to air dry before refilling if you do so. - Plant hummingbird-friendly flowers! By planting flowers that hummingbirds love, you'll also be helping out other pollinators and animals like bees and butterflies. by Joshua J. Cotten (Unsplash)

Happy World Migratory Bird day! Every spring and fall, PWRC admits migratory birds that need some TLC. The most common reason for admission? Window collisions! Millions of songbirds and other migratory birds get killed or injured every year due to window collisions. How can you help? Our favourite tip for making your windows bird-safe is to "paint" them with soap! You can also visit FLAP.org or birdsafe.ca to find out more about how to help our migratory birds. Have you ever seen a turtle move so fast? With the warm weather finally here, we recently said goodbye to one of our long-term patients. This Western Painted Turtle had to be overwintered when it missed its natural hibernation last fall. With Spring finally here, it time for it to be released back to its natural habitat, where it made its speedy getaway! Did you know that reptiles make up less than 1% of our patients? However, due to their hibernation needs and the fact that ...reptiles typically need more time to heal, they often end up being some of our longer-term patients! It's due to generous donors that we're able to care for patients like this Western Painted Turtle. Help injured and orphaned wildlife by donating today: Online via Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/donate/ Online via Canada Helps: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/11532 Fill out a donation form (https://pwildlife.ca/wp-cont/uploads/Donation-Form-2018.pdf) and mail a cheque to: Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Box 48059 RPO Lakewood Winnipeg, MB R2J 4A3 Phone: (204) 510-1855

Did you know that 2020 has been the busiest year to date for PWRC? Caring for all our wildlife patients means that we are running low on a few supplies and we would greatly appreciate the following items for Christmas! Christmas Wish List: - Mixed wild birdseed - Puppy pee pads... - Chinchilla exercise wheel (side-mounted; we use these to keep our overwintered squirrels occupied and in shape!) - White millet - Floor cleaner - XL garbage bags - Dish soap We understand that with current Covid-19 restrictions in place, you may not want to go and shop for these items. If this is the case, you can simply make a donation instead! If you are purchasing these items, you can either drop off at Pembina Vet Hospital (400 Pembina Hwy) or contact us for drop-off options!

Alice DeVos has been a huge supporter of PWRC and a dedicated participant of our annual Walk for Wildlife fundraiser. With the cancellation this year due to Covid, this didn’t stop her from trying. She said: Challenge Accepted . All through the month of September, She collected pledges and counted her steps. Yesterday, Alice handed me her pledge form and we couldn’t be any more prouder. With her fit bit keeping track, she completed : 307, 578 steps which translates ...to 123 miles walked and raised $705 for the care of injured wildlife. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We truly appreciate her dedication on fitness and raising funds for PWRC. Alice will be taking it easy the rest of the year. Her complaint : my feet are sore. I would totally agree, mine would hurt too. #challenge-accepted #walkforwildlife #pwrc #helpingwildlife See more

Everyday, Pwrc is truly thankful to the amazing Volunteers who help run the organization. From those who rescue and transport animals, to the education team that helps spread our message, animal care volunteers that feed our animals daily, others that input data to fundraising. There are so many more tasks that we could list, but our volunteers donate their time to saving wildlife. Today we want to send a special thank you to Grant and his family for building proper roofs on a couple of enclosures so we can use them more efficiently next summer. #volunteersarethebest. #pwrc #makingadifferenceforwildlife

Do you remember the pelican with the baby catfish stuck in its throat? He finished up his medication and eager to head back out in the wild. We drove him up to the Lockport dam were a group of pelicans weren’t far from shore. This young guy ate over $60/week of fish. Without your support, caring for these patients would not be possible.
