Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world. Parkinson’s has increased in Canada at a rate of 43%, outpacing most other countries in the world, including the USA who has seen a growth rate of less than 10%.
Why we exercise
Why we need our community
When I first met Teri 6 or so years ago she was interested in going to the PWR! Retreat (a week long exercise retreat for people with Parkinson’s!) At the time... though, she wasn’t physically able to do the things we did at the retreat. We walk for an hour each morning and then have 2-4 more classes during the day. At the time it was hard for her to walk for 6 minutes straight, which is one of the assessments we do. She was not able to do all the PWR! Moves. I didn’t want to tell her she couldn’t do the retreat, but I didn’t think it would be the best experience for her. Fast forward 6 years. She is 6 years older. Has had Parkinson’s 6 more years and SHE IS DOING BETTER!!! She now had#s competed in 5k races, walks on a treadmill and outside for exercise and does her PWR! Moves daily! This is what is possible with exercise!! This particular day I took video of her it was 5:30pm, her meds were wearing off it was 90 degrees outside and she wasn’t feeling great. But all those years of class took over and she was able to do everything and felt so much better after!! So many different ways to get exercise!
I last explored fear as it relates to Parkinsons. My final thoughts as they relate to Parkinsons and movement are on the irreplaceable value of feelings. ...Think less, feel more. Dont listen to music. Feel music. Dont see others. Feel what they feel. Dont tell yourself how youre feeling. Engage with your surroundings and allow your feelings to tell you. You get the idea. Awareness is as important as we hear it is. But its hard to think your way to this moment. It may even be impossible. But feeling the moment changes everything. Feel your depression and anxiety dissipate. Actually, just feel and you wont think about the negative emotions. Can you really feel those emotions away? Its not important what I believe. What about the scientific research? Well, I dont think theyre feeling it yet I didnt figure any of this out myself. Somebody taught me. Its impact has been immeasurable on Parkinson symptoms. Whats left for us to discover? Depends how deeply we can feel...

I am a broken record when it comes to this. Most people with #parkinsons are not doing enough #aerobic #exercise Classes like #boxing and #hig...hintensityintervaltraining can be a good cardio workout, if you are really able to push it. But I find many people are not able to keep their heart rate up during classes like that because there is a lot going on and there is a good amount of #cognitive work happening! Which is great! But these classes might be more on the skilled side of practice. How do you know if you are getting enough cardio? #measureit Take your heart rate during class, are you getting above 60% max? To 80% max? Are you keeping it there? Use a HR monitor to really see. Some people with #parkinsonsdisease are able to get their HR up and keep it up in a class, others need to supplement with some #straightcardio using a piece of equipment like a stationary bike or treadmill. I know its not the #sexy exercise that #boxing is, but it is necessary to achieve optimal outcomes. #exerciseismedicine See more
