PWU Connects 30.01.2021

Each year on December 6th, we recognize the National Day for the Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day was created in memory of the Ecole Polytechnique Massacre. In Montreal, 1989, a man took the lives of 14 women, as an act against feminism. Feminism is the desire for equal rights between men and women, a belief the PWU strongly agrees with. The PWU works every day to ensure our Membership understands their rights and knows that there is absolutely zer...o tolerance for any act of violence, against anyone. #nationaldayofremembranceandactiononviolenceagainstwomen #PWUConnects

Each year we are reminded of the ultimate sacrifice many of our relatives and neighbours took in the name of our freedom. Remembrance Day is a solemn day for so many. It’s a day to be humbled, to be eternally grateful for the many Canadians who laid down their lives for the mere hope of freedom. Today, we attempt to fully comprehend the immense sacrifice Canadian veterans took in order to prevent subsequent generations from having to endure as they did. Because of them, today... we live in a free country. Today, we live in peace. We encourage our Members to take two minutes of silence on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour to remember and pay our respects to the many soldiers who have and continue to fight for our freedom. The PWU’s very own, Tim Reesor has been working on an on-going project for the past decade called The Veterans. This project highlights Canadian veterans, explaining where they served, who they are, and the impact their service has had on them. This is a passion project for Tim, something he continues to add to in his free time. You can pay your respects to Canadian veterans by watching The Veterans videos, or by listening to them, as Tim has converted these videos into podcasts. Links to both options can be found below. The Veterans Videos: https://vimeo.com/channels/theveterans The Veterans Podcast: https://www.facebook.com/TheVeteransCanada Wear your poppies with pride today, take a moment for the fallen, and live in such a way that you are making tomorrow better for whom comes next- as our many veterans did for us. We are forever indebted to our veterans.

September’s Calendar winner is Joy Woodward. Her warm drawing, entitled Coming to An Agreement was chosen because it shows the importance of working together. The PWU doesn’t polarize themselves against other parties, instead, we listen and work together to come to a fair resolution, and ultimately a just agreement for our members. Thank you Joy for your great work! #PWUConnects

Happy (Virtual) Labour Day from the PWU! Labour Day 2020 looks a little different this year. Being unable to march in-person, we reminisce on years prior. Take the time to acknowledge the hard work you, and all other Labourers do for our province on a daily basis. We are Proud to be Power Workers! #PWUConnects #LabourDay2020 #ajustrecoveryforall... https://youtu.be/9N3tAlQHCd0

Emily Chen’s colourful sunset image, entitled High in the Air was August’s Calendar Contest Winner! At only 7 years old, Emily you have done a fantastic job of depicting one of our highly skilled members working on a Hydro Tower. Thank you Emily for your beautiful drawing! #PWUConnects

Have you ordered your PWU Orange T-Shirt yet? It’s simple! Make a donation to an Indigenous organization, follow this link: https://bit.ly/3dfgDl0 upload your donation receipt and receive a T-Shirt in the mail before September 30th! Orange Shirt Day is a solemn and significant day. On this day we honour survivors of the residential school system, where students were removed from their families and sent away for school. It’s a day that brings light to a very dark moment of C...anada’s history, and one that deserves acknowledgement. We would love to see as many PWU Members as we can wearing these shirts on September 30th this year, so get your orders in! #PWUConnects #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay
