The Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre - MacEwan University is offering awards for artists out there related to work or pursuits with Ukrainian Canadian themes/content (ie. not necessarily Ukrainian ). Pyretic's Lianna Makuch was grateful to receive the Anna Pidruchney Award last year for her play Blood of Our Soil. This is a wonderful opportunity for artists, especially at a time like this! A message from our pals at Punctuate! Theatre and Matthew Wishart MacKenzie: Call to action: supporting Indigenous artists in Treaty 6 In typical gracious fashion, Christine Sokaymoh Frederick has been asking for donations for her birthday for the Dreamspeakers Film Festival organization. ... While $2k is a great start, Dreamspeakers is in fact in vital need of $30k to pay rent, artists and employees until late January, when multiple sources of funding are at long last received. Are you an artist or an audience member who has been involved in or attended a live performance or arts event in Edmonton? Then you are more than likely the beneficiary of the remarkable work Dreamspeakers and Christine have been doingso please join me in donating to this important campaign! Dreamspeakers and Christine are tireless advocates for and engagers of Indigenous artists in Treaty 6. Christine has served on many boards and worked with virtually all of Edmonton’s arts companies, both big and small. She has served on the boards of the Edmonton Arts Council, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Edmonton Public Library, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra/ Winspear Centre, the Indigenous Arts Park and the City of Edmonton Indigenous Artist in residence program...and the list goes on and on. It is truly an incredible body of work of Indigenous advocacy that Christine has done for the last fifteen years, FOR FREE. Here is an incredible opportunity for our community to give back to a company which is led by somebody who has given of herself so selflessly to build up artists and companies in our vibrant arts city. Don’t have the money to donate at this time? No worries! Consider spreading the word about this call to action Together we can raise $30k. Let’s do it for Christine!

The 35//50 Initiative has invited Pyretic Productions alongside other professional theatre companies across Alberta to commit to representing Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton)'s civic landscape by hiring a minimum of 35% BIPOC & 50% women and non-binary people in paid professional positions by 2025. This initiative asks organizations to begin to track the numbers of their administrative and artistic team who identify as BIPOC, and those who identify as women or non-binary people.... Pyretic Productions is thrilled to publicly commit to this important initiative. We are also committing to an ongoing process of reviewing, examining, and actively integrating an anti-racist approach into our theatre practice. As part of our review process, we have collected statistics from our past professional theatre productions and are happy to share them as a step toward increased transparency. To continue this data collection process, for all future productions Pyretic will survey the participating artists so individuals may self-identify in terms of racial and specific gender identity. This data will continue to be shared on our website, including data that examines specific gender identities. We understand that this is only the beginning. We look forward to continuing to integrate the values and principles of the 35//50 initiative. We are committed to a long term, ongoing learning process and doing the work to examine how we can actively dismantle systemic racism in both the theatre community and in our personal artistic practices in a meaningful way. Our commitment will be posted on our website, along with our ongoing stats and links to local anti-racist resources and initiatives. We thank the 35//50 initiative for this invitation to engage in such an important endeavour. We encourage all professional and independent theatre companies across Alberta to examine their Calls to Action and take part in an open conversation about systemic racism in our artistic community.
