Great kitchen program quote this week I used to look at a mess I made, before I started working here, and I’d be like I can’t and now I see a mess I made or am making and I’m not worried about cleaning it up pictured: 1 and 3 @thenookpr cookie trials with loop donated holiday treats (we are learning about spacing and choosing the right equipment for the job) these cookies will be served at crc lunch tomorrow, and whatever left will go to outreach and OPS 2. Finding pre-soaking dishes in the sink while doing the 100th cleaning /check in round hosts an indescribably proud moment (and is sooo relevant to the kitchen quote above)

Holiday food access schedules, numbers and program information. Share widely for those in need, encourage printing of these types of resources in places where people who might need them, will see them! We are so happy to see that these posters have been distributed and made available by the city and regional district on their websites. Fight stigma! ... Keep safe, be well, stay cozy and kind. The Crc is open with regular appointment based services and lunch(12-2) tomorrow and then closed until January 4th. Our food crew will serve lasagna lunch on Tuesday dec 28th from 12-2.

Thinking of going shopping tomorrow? Instead, consider these ideas for a sustainable boxing day. 1. Go for a walk. With everyone in the mall, why not enjoy a qu...iet walk in the trail? 2. Go foraging. Take your family outdoors and forage for any winter fruits. Look at all the different shapes and sizes of the mushrooms in our forests! Take pictures or draw them! 3. Cozy up and pick up a book. What better time than a cold winter day to bundle up and read a new book 4. Make new dishes from your Christmas leftovers. Approximately 20% of Canadian food waste are from Christmas. Why not make new dishes from it instead? See more

FAN- Food Access Network- an initiative to connect food security and food access in the qathet regional district. We begin each meeting with a land acknowledgment, to acknowledge, underline and remind ourselves that our work with food and food systems all start with land. We review and adjust, as needed, our current list of intentions: We’re coming together to be an informal-information group for each other and our community based programs... To be advocates for food access for qathet vulnerable populations Not a policy council or official body at this time- we want to information share and get moving to support each other and our community food connections /access points Community support and promotion of each-others work Connect for input that is helpful - as needed Not duplicate or start programming without connections together with the lens of making sure it is needed Representatives/ members from each of these groups are invited and receive notes Food Bank, VCH, Lift, FCU, Texada, Tla’amin Nation, SD47, Seniors Association, Salvation Army, 7th Day, United Way, Lasqueti, Metis, Farmers Market, qathet RD, * everyone is welcome and we’d love to hear from anyone missing or interested. I am hoping in the next months the creation of a regional food charter might be of interest to this group and to our entire community... more on that to come

This was a big box with lots of local stuff @paradisevalleyproduce brussel sprouts, carrots, beets, and garlic! We got acorn squash from blu...eberry commons and then potato, onion, celery, oranges, bananas, lettuce and some Lift birthday red delicious apples from @townsitefruitnveg plus gleaner apples wow, thank you to all our partners and purchasers and our team behind the scene! With Remembrance Day just around the corner, we would like to reflect on the role of food during the Second World War. From Shannon Coulter-Low with Sustain O...ntario: "The Second World War saw the national mobilization of military personnel and civilians alike. Food became an integral part of the war effort and was strictly regulated by the Canadian Government. It was through the production, conservation and preparation of food that Canadians on the home front, particularly women, were encouraged to do their part. Food will win the war was the common slogan. During this era of patriotism and thrift, wasting good food while Canadian soldiers were fighting overseas was seen as a social and moral crime. When Britain’s food supplies were cut off, consumers were encouraged to eat foods that no longer had European export markets, such as apples and lobster. This was not the only way that diets changed. When rations were introduced in 1942, staples such as milk, butter, sugar and meat were limited. The resulting change in diets led to the publication of more than 200 wartime cookbooks that demonstrated ways for women to stretch rationed ingredients as far as possible in order to feed their families. Despite this, rationing was not as strict as in war-torn Europe, and Canadian families did not lack for food. In fact, the war actually saw an increase in per capita consumption. Food conservation skills were given a more profound meaning. The Department of Agriculture promoted home canning, which became a very popular way to preserve fresh produce. Much of this produce was grown in urban victory gardens, which are estimated to have produced 57,000 tonnes of vegetables at their peak in 1944." "Many people are interested in growing their own food, especially with the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic. Food security no longer seems as certain as it has in... the past. In this workshop, you will learn how planting a food forest can ensure harvest of tree fruits, nuts, herbal medicines and berries year after year, often increasing yields as trees mature. When planted using permaculture techniques, a food forest goes far beyond a conventional orchard, helping to sustain itself with biodiversity and other protective measures. BC is an ideal place in which to grow a variety of perennial food crops and even a surprisingly small space can accommodate an abundantly producing woodland. Please note that advanced registration is required for this workshop. To learn more and register, visit:"

Dear Beekeepers, The Asian Giant Hornet (AGH) has entered its raiding phase (~slaughter phase). Any nests that have been developing through the summer are now a...t the stage of searching for honey bee colonies that can be raided. Access to bee brood is the aim, so that they can feed their own brood to develop into reproductive queens (and drones). Washington State has just reported the collection of five specimens about 2 km south of the Canada-US border near 232nd and 240th Street. I urge all beekeepers, especially those near the Canada-US border to monitor their colonies closely. When you see any large hornet at your apiary, please don’t kill it but notice which direction it flies to. This will help in our search of nests. If there are several hornets at the apiary, you may try to catch one; a soft hit to get it onto the ground, and place in a container. Place container in fridge for 30 minutes to immobilize the insect, take a few pics and submit for ID. If a hornet is spotted, please email me promptly and indicate the time and location of the sighting. Thanks for your support. Orange Shirt Day is September 30th in recognition of the harm the residential school system has caused to residential school victims, survivors and their famili...es. The residential school system sought to assimilate Indigenous peoples by erasing Indigenous identity, culture, self-esteem and well-being. This date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were stolen from their families and coerced to attend residential schools. As an affirmation of our commitment to ensure everyone around us matters, Lift Community Services has come together to honor those who have been affected by the legacy Canada has left behind. This is an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue about the harmful effects of Residential Schools and the legacy of how Canada treated Indigenous Peoples. Orange Shirt Day is a day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected intergenerationally. #orangeshirtday #everychildmatters

A very fitting coincidence that today, the first international day of awareness of food loss and waste reduction we were in the kitchen sifting though the 15 boxes of fresh produce and meats we received yesterday afternoon from the Loop food waste reduction project... 7 days a week in collaboration with Powell River Food Bank , The Salvation Army Powell River and 7th day Adventist, in coordination by Loop who created the partnership with Save on Foods, we rescue food for hum...ans before animals before waste streams... (we are lucky to receive 2 pick ups per week) Whatever we don’t take from the stores is picked up later in the afternoon by local animal farmers. This is a change from the previous grocery to farm animals or straight to landfill system and is fitting with the food hierarchy we hope to see across the world when it comes to food waste, reduction and consumption! The food we rescue goes into meals to feed our vulnerable community members visiting the community resource centre for a friendly face, and food connection at drop in or at OPS hours. Anything left after that is sent out with the outreach team members! Any and everything we deem not fresh enough or veggie scraps, are going into our community garden compost stream to go back into the garden (thank you Tom and Let's Talk Trash team ) We also rescue leftover produce from Townsite Fruit and Veg twice a week! Today we served up hot chicken noodle soup, fruit salad, loaves of bread/bags of buns and whole boxed sweet treats. Tomorrow we will have more fresh food available for our clients and community. We start dishing at 12pm and finish serving around 2:30.

Beautiful public statement and resources/connection from qCJ and DEI in Solidarity with Tla'aamin Nation To all of qathet: We at qathet Community Justice and Lift’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion group wish to express our unending thanks to the Tla’amin Nation for their swift, transparent and decisive actions to keep all in our region as safe as possible in this last week. While our region has already seen multiple confirmed cases of COVID-19, this is the first instance a lo...cal health authority has released the information. We are proud to stand alongside the Nation as they take these bold, brave steps to help us all protect ourselves and each other. We recognize that in doing so, they have prioritized the safety of our entire community over their own comfort, security and privacy. In turn, we respond with gratitude and support for the people on whose lands we are privileged to reside. We pledge to help our community members transition through fear into understanding, and work together in our shared fight across qathet to help address this health emergency. This novel Coronavirus does not discriminate based on borders, and we as qathet community members must lean into our shared humanity and support each other unconditionally. This public outbreak is an opportunity to come together collectively in our care for each other.
