Gaie Orton-Kennedy is a proud grandmother of two grandbabies who both needed care at the QEH NICU. Her first grandchild, Bridgett, needed the NICU a few years ago and Henry, who was born at the QEH on June 8th, was under care and is awaiting specialized surgery off-Island. "He is beautiful, healthy, and a hit with staff in Pediatrics where he was a patient," says Orton-Kennedy. "The nurses, doctors and all the support staff have gone above and beyond to make a stressful time... as easy as possible. We were even able to baptize Henry a few weeks ago in the QEHs Place of Prayer chapel. We have a hospital of which to be very proud." Gaie recently made a beautiful gift toward the Wo He Lo fundraiser for a $72,000 Giraffe Omnibed for the NICU. She encourages others to make a gift by visiting their website https://www.qehfoundation.pe.ca/wohelo/ "And if you adore sunflowers like I do, take a drive to Hazelbrook to the Docherty farm, Lil Farm On The Jib, to pick up a beautiful bouquet with half of the proceeds going toward the new isolette covers that are now needed at the NICU."

A year ago we profiled a story on the vein viewer and its new technology now available for patients at the QEH. Bobby Briehl, a cancer patient at the time, visited our office and praised the equipment and the difference it made for patients like him. As a dedicated Lions Club member, he told us that the North Rustico Lions Club was determined to purchase more vein viewers for the hospital. Sadly, Bobby passed last November. He remembered the QEH in his Will by leaving a bequ...est of $5,000 to the North Rustico Lions Club to help purchase a vein viewer. Inspired by their dear friend, the club matched his donation for a total gift of $10,000 enough to purchase this equipment that Bobby was so passionate about. Here are club members Robert Doiron and Elliott Doiron presenting a cheque to Development Officer Heather McGrath of the QEH Foundation. Also meet Tracey Hagan-OConnor, who is the QEH Vascular Access Nurse Coordinator, as she demonstrates how the vein viewer works. Please join us as we salute the never-ending generosity of the North Rustico Lions Club as they also honour one of their much-loved members, the late Bobby Briehl! #ThankQ! **A vein viewer is used throughout the hospital to allow easier intravenous access for adult and child patients who experience pain, discomfort, or anxiety while having their blood drawn or receiving intravenous therapy.

Mary (nee Hyndman) Laflamme has a lifelong connection to Wo He Lo. Wo He Lo is a group of approximately twenty-five women who fund raise to support PEIs smallest and most fragile infants and their families who need care at the QEH. Marys mother, the late Etta Hyndman, was a member for more than 40 years and, like many other Wo He Lo members, Mary followed in her mothers footsteps and enthusiastically joined when the opportunity presented itself. ... Wo He Lo is continuing to help the QEH neonatal ICU, despite the cancellation of this years spring and fall clothing sales, due to Covid-19, adds Laflamme. We are confident we can raise enough to purchase the new Giraffe Omnibed that costs $72,000. To date, we have raised $53,000. Her husband, Fred, says their family is committed to helping the QEH. They had a major scare early in the summer when Mary had a very serious anaphylactic reaction and was rushed to the QEH Emergency Department. Your likes and shares make a difference. Yesterday a shared post from our friends at Lil Farm On The Jib made its way to an Island mom living overseas who then donated to the QEH NICU. Read her sweet story: "I am an Islander living overseas and also was a preemie mom so would love to assist with these [isolette] covers. I saw the request [shared on a friends Facebook page]. When my daughter was born, I was very fortunate to live 5 minutes from the hospital where she was in... the NICU. I have always felt so much empathy for the PEI preemie moms who had to be in Halifax during such a stressful time. I think its fabulous that more babies can stay close to home and would love to support it. My parents and my husband and I would like to buy a cover in honour of my little 31w5d preemie .. who is now a happy and healthy 15 year old." - J.C.- Grand Cayman Islands Lil Farm On The Jib continues to fundraise for isolette covers through their Sunflower U-Pick. #TBT Today as a Throw Back Thursday, we share a picture that was featured in last years annual report. Here is Hon. Doris Anderson from St. Peters with Dr. Greg German, QEH Medical Microbiologist and Infectious Disease Consultant. We recently chatted with Doris and she wanted to pass along her thanks to all QEH staff, and especially the QEH Laboratory staff. ... The staff in our provincial laboratory has been so instrumental in keeping Islanders safe during COVID-19 and today I salute them. This summer has produced some of the best roses and here are a few that remain from my garden that I hope will brighten your day. Anderson shared a local story about the 1918 Spanish flu in her community. My father often told me how devastated our community was with the loss of life during that pandemic. There is one tombstone in our Midgell cemetery in which four children in one family had perished. We are fortunate to live in PEI under the leadership of Dr. Heather Morrison and Premier Dennis King. And as Canadians, we have an excellent health care system and I know Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will guide us carefully through this pandemic over the next few months.

Today our thoughts are with the Sefau family with the recent passing of dearly loved QEH Ophthalmologist Dr. Suleiman Sefau, who passed away on July 15th after a five year battle of cancer. Dr. Sefau was a dedicated QEH eye specialist who performed thousands of eye surgeries and improved the vision and the quality of life of many Island patients who required specialized eye care. A quote in his obituary sums up his love for his profession, As an ophthalmologist, he cared fo...r people in their most vulnerable conditions with the utmost compassion and love. Dr. Sefau was also a wonderful supporter of our QEH Foundations equipment needs and will be greatly missed by all. https://www.cbc.ca//pei-eye-surgeon-obituary-july-2020-1.5

Samantha Wilson and Brandon Perry of Stratford welcomed baby Levi on June 4th. The first-time parents were grateful that Levi could remain in PEI for care after his unexpected arrival at 32 weeks. Weighing a mere 3 lbs, Levi required specialized care from obstetrician Dr. Peter Bethune, pediatrician Dr. Peggy Bethune, and staff of the new provincial neonatology service including PEIs only neonatologist Dr. Beth Ellen Brown. Levis dad, Brandon, says his son is already fam...ous. Levi is the first baby on PEI to get a PICC line inserted since the beginning of the new neonatal service. It goes from his arm to his heart and helps manage his blood sugar. Before Dr. Browns arrival, families like ours would have had to travel off-Island. Levis mom, Samantha, says they are overwhelmed with the great care they are receiving. Levi is now almost 4 lbs and thriving. It was a scary few days leading up to his birth. I had an ultrasound two days before and they found a problem with my placenta. We travelled to the IWK the next day but luckily we were able to return home, as QEH staff were comfortable having Levi delivered in PEI. The next morning I was diagnosed with preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, which meant it was unsafe for Levi to remain inside me. The QEH staff have been wonderful and we are so thankful this can all happen so close to home, especially during this, COVID-19 pandemic.
