Queen's Female Leadership in Politics Conference 08.07.2021

As a woman, a person of colour, and an aspiring politician, I had goosebumps watching her speak with such triumph and strength. I felt liberated. In our latest blog post author Rida Chaudhry details the significance of Kamala Harris’ election and the symbolic choice of clothing that served as a reminder of all that came before her. https://qflip.ca///suffragette-white-on-a-woman-of-colour/

Happy #MeetTheExecMonday!! Say hello to Megan, Aloka and Kiana, The Logistics, and Speakers Teams for QFLIP 2021/2022. Here’s a little bit more about these lovely ladies: Megan (she/her) is QFLIP’s amazing Logistics Director. She is in her fourth year of Political Sciences, with a certificate in business and is from Hamilton, Ontario. Megan believes that intersectionality in feminism means gender empowerment - no matter an individual’s ethnicity, cultural background, age, rel...igious affiliation, sexual orientation, or other intersecting factors. She also has a hidden talent of playing drums. Aloka (she/her) is QFLIP’s amazing Speakers Coordinator. She is in her third year of PPE with a certificate in business, and is from Scarborough, Ontario. Aloka believes that intersectionality in feminism means the inclusion of all different identities in the women's movement, and recognizing how various barriers unfairly associated with people's identities shape their lived experiences. There is no "one-size-fits-all" form of feminism. Her hidden talent is her ability to sing! Kiana (she/her) is QFLIP’s amazing Speakers Coordinator. She is in her second year in the Sciences with a minor in music, and is from Thunder Bay, Ontario. Kiana believes that intersectional feminism is embodying the voices of those experiencing forms of oppression that overlap, with the goal of developing a deep understanding of these injustices and the relationships that exist between them. Her hidden talent is her ability to teach herself a song on the piano by ear.

As the province has reckoned with Premier Ford's new COVID-19 restrictions announced yesterday, it has become abundantly clear that the enhanced powers given to police across the province could have a disproportionate and devastating impact on racialized communities. These are also the communities that have been hit the hardest throughout the pandemic, and where vaccination rates are lower than many other neighborhoods in the province. We would like to highlight that the Bla...ck Legal Action Centre is available to any Black Ontarians who experience issues with the police, or need other legal services during the stay-at-home order. They can be reached by telephone at 1-877-736-9406 or at https://www.blacklegalactioncentre.ca/. To highlight the incredible work BLAC is doing and has done, we would like to reshare the webinar with did with former Executive Director at BLACK, Ruth Goba. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z43uwD4z4M0&t=3s
