The Order is Closing So Social Events Matter Even More The Waterloo Region Rainbow Coalition (WRRC) is saddened by the recent announcement of the closing of T...he Order. The Order has provided a much needed social gathering space for members of the LGBTQ+ community in Waterloo Region. In addition, WRRC is proud to have partnered with the Order last June in organizing the Waterloo Region Candlelight Vigil for the Orlando Shootings (link attached). The Order's commitment to our community has been appreciated and we know it will be missed by many - ourselves included. Pride Party Background: WRRC is a key partner in the local Queer Night Out initiative and we are aware that the Order's last night of operation is the same evening as the annual Pride Party. The WRRC board has engaged in conversations as to whether or not we should cancel the event, in recognition that many individuals may, understandably, plan to attend the farewell celebrations at the Order. We decided to continue plans to hold the Pride Party, for the reasons outlined below. Reasons: 1. We still need social spaces for our community - The Queer Night Out initiative began as a community response to the closing of another LGBTQ+ dance club - Club Renaissance. At that time, the community banded together to organize a series of dances, in acknowledgement of the need for social gathering spaces for the community. - When the Order opened, the Queer Night Out initiative continued, though limited its dance events to predominately the Pride weekend. Queer Night Out continued to host an annual dance out of recognition both that our community was large and diverse enough to support more than one event (especially during Pride) and that there was a danger in not diversifying gathering spaces for our community and potentially encountering the same situation we did when Club Renaissance closed. - Upon further thought and reflection, we realized that these reasons, sadly, remain relevant for our community. 2. Our volunteers have committed financial resources to this event that they would have to absorb if cancelled - Since the event is run both on a not-for-profit basis and completely staffed by volunteers, absorbing the deposits and upfront costs of the event through cancellation was a great deal to ask of those coordinating the event. Moving Forward: In light of the above, WRRC will continue to be supporting the Pride Party on June 4th. Hosting this event is important to ensure that there are spaces for the entire community to gather during the local Pride celebrations. In addition, with the Order closing, we realize that there may be a call for the Queer Night Out initiative to once again ramp up its hosting of dances and hosting the Pride Party will help our existing (and hopefully new found) volunteers develop the capacity to offer more events in the future. We hope that you will consider joining us at the Pride Party on June 4th - but understand if you will be going to the Order instead. If you would still like to support the Queer Night Out initiative, but won't be attending Pride Party, we have added a "donation" option to our online tickets sales. As always, in the rare event that there are any funds left over after the event, they are used to offset the costs of the next dance or other social events that contribute to our local LGBTQ+ community here in Waterloo Region.
