Expecting? Don’t Neglect Your Teeth Even though most people are aware that good oral health is essential for the overall health of both mother and child, misunderstandings about the safety of dental care during pregnancy may cause pregnant women to avoid seeing their dentist. The fact is that dentists can create a treatment plan that is safe, effective, and essential for combating the adverse effects of oral disease during pregnancy. During the course of pregnancy, a woman's... oral health can undergo significant changes. According to an article published in the November/December 2010 issue of General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), pregnant women can experience gingivitis, pregnancy tumors, and mild to severe gingival enlargement. Clinically, pregnancy gingivitis is no different than non-pregnancy gingivitis. Patients will experience redness and inflammation of the gums, bleeding on probing, and increased tooth mobility. Between 30 to 100 percent of pregnant women will experience varying degrees of gingivitis. "Although bleeding and inflammation of the gums has been noted in all trimesters of pregnancy, it typically disappears three to six months after delivery, provided that proper oral hygiene measures are implemented," says Crystal L. McIntosh, DDS, MS, lead author of the article. "Good oral hygiene and visits to a dentist can help to alleviate gum inflammation." Pregnancy tumors are reported by 10 percent of pregnant women. These tumors, which are not cancerous, appear as a growth in the mouth and usually disappear after the child is born. They typically are painless and purple or red in color, but they can exhibit spontaneous bleeding. "If a pregnancy tumor is painful, bleeds severely, or interferes with eating, surgical removal is the treatment of choice," says AGD spokesperson Robert Roesch, DDS, MAGD. Gingival enlargement, which is an overgrowth or an increase in the size of the gums, occurs less frequently than gingivitis and pregnancy tumors. In severe cases, the gums can "grow" to cover the teeth completely. "Pregnancy gingivitis and gingival enlargement are thought to be the result of a heightened response to bacteria in the mouth," says Dr. Roesch. "That's why it is extremely important to educate and motivate patients to maintain good oral hygiene during pregnancy." If proper oral hygiene is not initiated prior to or during pregnancy, conditions such as gingivitis, pregnancy tumors, and gingival enlargement can worsen as the pregnancy progresses. Pregnant women should maintain their regular, semi-annual checkups and are recommended to visit Quali-Dent (622-3777) if they notice any changes in their oral health.

There are many factors that cause tooth decay in children including the frequency in which foods are eaten and the time they remain as particles in the mouth. For the most part, parents think candy is the biggest culprit for causing tooth decay however, foods that are high in carbohydrates, some juices and sodas and things like peanut butter, crackers and potato chips are just as bad. All too often, babies are put to bed with a bottle of juice or milk which potentially may ad...d to baby bottle syndrome or nursing bottle syndrome. When baby teeth have prolonged exposure to milk or fruit juice, baby teeth can become decayed from their lengthy exposure to the sugar and acid contents in milk or fruit juices. Fructose in juice and lactose in milk have potential to bathe teeth in sugars that increase acid production in the mouth; leading to demineralization and tooth decay. Cavity-causing bacteria can easily be transmitted from a mother to a child through the saliva thus; Quali-Dent recommends that you don’t share saliva with your child through common use of feeding spoons or sucking pacifiers. Remember also, starting early is the key to a lifetime of good dental health. Encourage your child to drink tap water or bottled water that is fluoridated. Provide your child with a straw when drinking juices or soda to keep sugar away from the teeth remembering; bottled juices are not a good alternative due to their high sugar contains. And, more importantly, speak to your dentist if you notice any dullness to your child’s tooth surface. Parents should take their child to the dentist prior to turning two years old. Brushing teeth after meals, regular flossing and fluoride treatments are the best ways to prevent tooth decay. Children should also be supervised as they brush. A good rule of thumb is that when children can dress themselves and tie their own shoes, they are ready to brush unsupervised. Children should be supervised in proper flossing techniques until the age of 10. If you have any concerns about your child’s dental health or would like some tips on preventing tooth decay, visit www.Quali-Dent.ca and remember to make your child’s regular dental appointments by calling 622-3777. The Root of the Problem Inside your teeth is a soft material called pulp that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. If this pulp becomes infected, it can cause severe tooth pain. In some cases, that infection will require root canal therapy. What is a root canal? Nerves enter at the tip of the tooth’s roots and run through the center of the tooth in small, thin root canals, which join up in the pulp chamber. Each tooth has a least one root canal but may conta...Continue reading
