Finding control amid the chaos One of the most difficult things about live sparring (often referred to as rolling) for a new student is establishing some form of control. Being able to cut out the noise, the chaos, that happens when your training partner is actively trying to apply techniques they’ve learned. Conceptual ideas should be focused on first, with the techniques used to fill in the gaps. Think about what the -goal- of the situation / position you’re in is, and ...the technique will do the rest.
