I am almost always the only disabled person in the room. I have a spinal cord injury and am paralyzed from the chest down. I use a wheelchair for my mobility. Accessibility is always a hurdle, but I am used to dealing with it because it’s a part of my life. I have what I like to call ‘ninja patience.’ I came up with this phrase after noticing many of my friends become impatient about little things. It got me thinking about the special skills I have because of my disability; patience is one of them. With municipalities jumping onboard to make masks a mandatory requirement when inside public spaces, we seem to be forgetting the barriers they impose on people who are Deafblind, hard of hearing or deaf. From a recent article in the Washington Post, "For those of us who speak American Sign Language, masks can be a nuisance because they inhibit mouth movements and other facial expressions that are part of the language’s grammar. And in interactions in which deaf people rely o...n speech-reading and facial cues, masks make communication nearly impossible." We've ordered our see-through masks, and we hope you'll consider ordering them too! We can't wait for the next #a11yHAM meetup taking place on Thursday, June 20 at Mohawk College. This one features Sandi Gauder from CMS Web Solutions, a senior front-end developer and accessibility specialist, as she walks through a live remediation of an inaccessible website using various accessibility checking tools. Sandi will remediate each accessibility error in turn and explain the process to achieve WCAG 2.1 compliance. Don't miss out! Register today. There's still ti...me to register!
