If you haven't had a chance to pick up our new Book, that was a privilege to co-author with our favourite local author Vernon Oickle, there are still a number of signed copies available at the Museum. The price is $24.95 no tax. It would definitely make a lovely Christmas gift for those friends or family who love to look at old vintage photos around the County. Please call 354-4058 or message us and we would be happy to set aside a copy for you. You can also pick up a copy at the Shore Thing Emporium, Port Grocer and Pharmasave. :-)

What a thrill to see that genealogy buff, Peter Jr Hanley is a 5th cousin to Brenton Smith! Clearly his genealogy skills and passion for genealogical research and recording are genetic. :-) Brenton Smith will always be the man of the hour in genealogical history and preservation,. A gentleman from back in the day, who though passionate about it, remained humble the entire time.

Can you help identify? A gentleman brought this into the museum for help in identifying. He found it metal detecting in the area. :-)

A little tribute from the Queens County Museum: A piece of Milton's history came down this morning, Tuesday, October 13, 2020. As I drove by, watching the excavator, I thought of Milton's late Historian, Harley Walker telling us how he thought this was one of Milton's early Cape Cod homes and in later years had a second story added to it. THE TUPPER HOUSE, several generations of Tuppers living in the house, the last one being dear friend, Christine Tupper, who was responsible for bringing the old Milton Blacksmith Shop back to life and seeing it become a little community museum. This house will live on in pictures now. Her architectural and family history will be preserved forever. <3

One week ago, the Board of Trustees, Queens County Museum sent an email to the municipal candidates. They were asked to respond to three questions. Responses are posted in no order. As a reminder here are the three questions: Value of Museums What kind of support do you envisage the Region of Queens offering the Queens County Museum in the future? What role do you feel the Queens County Museum plays in supporting the Region of Queens? Focusing on tourism, what role do you see... the Queens County Museum playing? Below are the candidates’ answers. See more

Response from Jason Croft candidate for Councilor for District 6 Value of Museums What kind of support do you envisage the Region of Queens offering the Queens County Museum in the future?... What role do you feel the Queens County Museum plays in supporting the Region of Queens? Focusing on tourism, what role do you see the Queens County Museum playing? 1- Although I admittedly have never been involved in the process, I am aware that the Queens County Museum has regularly been granted operational funds by the Region, including $5 000 in this past fiscal year. Looking in from the outside, the long-standing history of the Region supporting the Museum in this fashion leads one to imagine that it would continue. 2- Having had the privilege of working alongside the Queens County Museum staff (as a member of the Privateer Days Commission) I was able to take in their and the Museum's importance first hand. The Queens County Museum has multiple supporting roles for the Region, including adding historical content to Privateer Days, acting as a hub for local attractions like Little Boo and the Christmas Home Tour, and - of course - being a tourist attraction in it's own right. Additionally, the Queens County Museum has an important voice within the community, introducing new authors and crafters, and providing an avenue for our immense local talent to reach a wider audience. 3- Both the Town of Liverpool, and the Region of Queens as a whole, lean heavily on their deep, rich histories in promoting and advertising our County as a rewarding tourism destination. Certainly, the Queens County Museum plays into that theme, helping to outline the local genealogy and cartography, as well as giving a unique insight into the area's famous Privateering past. The response from Tara Smith candidate for Councilor for District 1. What kind of support do you envisage the Region of Queens (RQM) offering the Queens County Museum in the future? I feel the contribution that the Queens County Museum makes to Queens County is invaluable! My understanding is that 50% of funding comes from the province with the remainder of funding coming from fundraising, donations and grants. Therefore it is vital to the operations of this valuable resource... that the RQM continues to support via grants as requested by Queens County Museum. Should the museum be faced with financial hardship extra funding should be provided per needs and as the RQM budget is able to support. What role do you feel the Queens County Museum plays in supporting the Region of Queens? The museum plays a extremely important role in the Region of Queens not only by preserving our county’s history but as an economic driver. Our rich history of ship building, roles in both World Wars, Mi’Kmaq, Privateer and African heritage need to be preserved at all costs. The preservation of our museum is vital in telling our stories to future generations. The museum provides local jobs and attracts well over 10,000 visitors annually contributing to our local economy. Queens County Museum plays an important role in providing a catalyst for the education of our children by providing programming for local schools. It provides community supports with cultural and local interest workshops and programs as well as hosting and participating in local festivals, cultural events and celebrations. The museum provides a rich and diverse history that contributes to our local economy. Culture and heritage are worth the investment to enrich our quality of life and add tremendous value and benefit to our communities. Focusing on tourism, what role do you see the Queens County Museum playing? As we continue as a region to put Queens County on the tourist map as an exciting and welcoming destination the museum system here in Queens is vitally important as an attracting feature. We are fortunate to have the Queens County museum together with the gift shop, Thomas Raddall Research Centre, Queens Museum of Justice and the newly restored Perkins House ( hopefully open as part of the Nova Scotia Museum network again in 2021) as part of this beautiful community. This heritage hub adds great value as a tourist drawing factor for Liverpool and Queens. Local government must promote and grow our tourist industry to support our local economy Tara Smith Candidate Councillor District 1

The response from Dan MacLaren candidate for Councilor for District 4. Value of Museums Thank you for the opportunity to participate in your questionnaire. I wish to state upfront that I am a member of the Board of Trustees for the Queens County Museum but at no time in advance did I see or have any knowledge of these questions. Here are my responses. What kind of support do you envisage the Region of Queens offering the Queens County Museum in the future? The Region of Queen...s should continue to financially support the museum through the grants to organizations that is reviewed each year. Further the region does and should continue to promote the museum in all literature and social media outlets. At all events that the region attends to promote Queens County the museum and its staff should be offered space to showcase a small display about the history of the area. What role do you feel the Queens County Museum plays in supporting the Region of Queens? The museum plays an important role in showcasing the history of the area and its people. They provide education programs for school age children, and a non invasive visitor experience to people who come through the doors. The museum also provides community activities that promote the region for the local residents such as the Easter Egg Hunt, and the Christmas display of both the decorated trees and Dickensville. The staff and volunteers at the museum have a wealth of knowledge about the area and many have lived here all their lives. They can and do provide information about the Liverpool town and also the surrounding areas including Brooklyn, Milton and North Queens. Focusing on tourism, what role do you see the Queens County Museum playing? The museum is an integral part of the visitor experience in Queens County. They have a gift shop that has many items unavailable elsewhere, an archive that anyone is welcome to use to trace their ancestry, and displays that take visitor back in time all the way to the founding of the area. Whether a first time visitor or friends who make the museum a stop on each visit there is something new and exciting to see and learn. The staff will also recommend other points of interest throughout the county. Submitted by Dan MacLaren Council Candidate, District 4 See more

The response from David Brown candidate for Councilor for District 6. Thank you for putting forward these questions for the candidates. 1. What kind of support do you envisage the Region of Queens offering the Queens County Museum in the future? To answer this question I first had to find the level of funding that exists now. I looked to the last budget and did not discover any funding to the Queens County Museum in that document. The museum is a provincial institution, but I... did discover that funding was provided through a grant to assist with operations. I see this as being a good way to proceed. It would give the ability to preserve Queens County artifacts and keep them in the community. The grant process allows requests to be evaluated case by case on their own merit, while allowing flexibility in the budget to put funding where it is most appropriate. Another possibility to investigate, is subsidized admissions for those who find it challenging to visit, similar to programs in place for fitness facilities. 2. What role do you feel the Queens County Museum plays in supporting the Region of Queens? As we move to become a more inclusive society, the museum and its histories can be a great asset in discovering how we have come to the place we find ourselves now. By showing how we have interacted with each other, both good and bad, we can more easily move toward resolution of past conflict and learn the lessons needed to avoid repeating those actions. Education is the first step toward easing long held tensions, and museums hold the keys to that education. 3. Focusing on tourism, what role do you see the Queens County Museum playing? The museum is the keeper of our artifacts and stories. I see the potential in promoting those stories as well as preserving them. Having the museum as an interactive location to reconnect with the artifacts and stories gives residents and tourists alike a better grasp on the history of the area. The times we find ourselves in, we must look to tourists in our own region as well as outside to look to this as a destination. The Family History Center has the potential to draw more researchers, both amateur and professional, as more of us strive to discover our roots. I have kept my answers brief to hopefully keep us from overwhelming the readers with the number of candidates we have in this election. I look forward to the other responses and hope that the collective wisdom of so many working for the benefit of the residents of Queens will open a dialogue that provides real progress. I also look forward to the questions from the readers and hope they trigger more ideas for the future. Thanks, David Brown. See more

The response from Kevin Muise candidate for Councilor for District 1. Board of Trustees History was never my strongest subject in school, but since becoming a councillor I have come to see the importance of history to our county. Being on the Heritage Committee has made me aware of the benefits of the Queens County Museum. As well being part of this committee, I see the knowledge of the staff at the museum have to share. If I am re-elected I hope to stay as a member of the He...ritage Committee. I will work with the region and the museum to keep the Queens County Museum an asset of the Region of Queens Municipality. The response from Brian Fralic candidate for Mayor, Region of Queens What kind of support do you envisage the Region of Queens offering the Queens County Museum in the future? We have created the Community Investment Fund to support all important organizations such as the Queens County Museum. The purpose of this fund is to support each organization fairly when financial need is required. Very important that the support is available as other levels of government always look a...t how municipalities support organizations. The QCM is instrumental in celebrating our history and we are fortunate to have them to share our stories. We have and will continue to work closely together with the Queens County Museum and always be an advocate for them. What role do you feel the Queens County Museum plays in supporting the Region of Queens? All organizations should support each other as we move forward. Truly important when you are dealing with all levels of government. Often these levels of government look at how municipalities support these organizations and make their decisions based on this. Together we can eliminate the obstacles facing museums in this new environment. History is an important part of our communities and need to be showcased and supported. This sends a clear message to all! Focusing on tourism, what role do you see the Queens County Museum playing? The museum is a intricate part of tourism. Queens County boasts many aspects of history and it is important to showcase these along with everything else we have to offer. I believe that everyone who visits Queens should always leave with a better understanding of our history and culture. In my previous role of Chair of Privateer Days, we presented a festival that appealed to everyone but history was always the focus and carried out in the later years by staff of Queens County Museum to ensure it would always be important as part of this festival.
