February is Black History Month, and I would like to celebrate Barrington Walker for his work and the impact he has had on Kingston & the Islands. Barrington ha...s had deep ties to the Kingston community as a citizen, educator and a political candidate. He was the first Black tenured professor in the Department of History at Queen's University and one of the first Black candidates to run for federal office in Kingston. He sees that this as a signal that Kingston is becoming a more inclusive community. Thank you for your contributions to this city! See more

In the wake of the arrests of land defenders on sovereign Wet’suwet’en territory, the QNDP is calling for the Canadian and BC governments to remove the RCMP and end their occupation. Canada and BC must adhere to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People and recognize the sovereignty of the Hereditary Chiefs and the right to free, prior, and informed consent. To date, all levels of government have failed to live up to the spirit of reconciliation and h...alted progress on building a better relationship. Canada remains a colonial state that ignores the rights of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit and upholds policies which marginalize and impoverish Indigenous Peoples. We can no longer tolerate governments which trample on rights and enforces violent regimes in the name of extractive industry. Both the B.C and the Canadian government must stop pretending they have no power over the issue. It is within their power to meet their moral obligation to the Wet’suwet’en. Call off the RCMP, meet with the Hereditary Chiefs, and prevent Coastal Gaslink from invading unceded territory. #wetsuwentenstrong #cdnpoli
