The Skinners have been proud Downtowners for decades!!! https://www.cntraveler.com//st-catharines-ontario-surprisi
We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of Ontario. And, fall is one of the best times of the year to go for a hike in one of the many parks and conservation areas we have in the Niagara Region. This afternoon, we drove out to the country to buy some apples and to hike a few of the trails at St. Johns Conservation Area. The colours this year are awesome!
Back home from a wonderful road trip to Tobermory, Sault Ste. Marie and Port Carling to see the fall colours. Now we get to enjoy them all over again in our beautiful Niagara Region!
Its a beautiful Saturday morning in Downtown St. Catharines. Photos - the Dragon wing begonias on our front porch. Theyre huge this year! Soon, well be off to breakfast (not sure where yet) and then Market Square. Its a gorgeous day in the neighborhood!
We did it again! Superhost status third time in a row!
Our village is right in the heart of Downtown St. Catharines so many of our favourite walks take place right here in the Downtown. This morning, we walked to one of our favourite spots behind St. Paul Street. We took the stairs across from Helliwell Lane down through the tunnel lined with graffiti art (kinda cool) to the recently transformed docklands of the first Welland Canal. The canal has long since been replaced by Highway 406. Thankfully, the old Canada Haircloth build...ing still remains, serving a new purpose as the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine Arts. The buildings along that part of St. Paul Street drop down three floors, exposed at the back, revealing portals of old where the merchant sailors could buy what they needed to drink as well as short-term companionship! The jungle has been groomed into a beautiful, shady walkway all the way to Carlisle Street where you resurface behind the new Performing Arts Centre, another wonderful addition to our Downtown. Follow our photos as we continue our walk back home past many of our favourite places.
Were lucky to have a number of great self-guided walking tour brochures available in St. Catharines. We snagged a few for our Airbnb guests. Weve always loved being ambassadors for our city, especially Downtown!
Welcome to Queen Street Village this fine Wednesday morning. Now, this is what weve been waiting for - sunshine and clear, blue skies! We have a wonderful outdoor space in the Village, just for us - our own little courtyard. This morning, were chillin in the courtyard ... (Note the leaded glass window hanging on the fence. We retrieved it from the rubble when they tore down our beautiful YMCA on Queen Street.)
We love living Downtown. Pretty much every Saturday morning, we walk to Market Square with a good friend of ours. The weather was so beautiful this past Saturday that we decided to have our breakfast at the Market. Josie had Eh Joses Huevos Rancheros (she says theyre the best shes ever had). We opted for TJs amazing breakfast sandwiches. And, of course, we all had Voulas organic coffee. The Market was busy with vendors and shoppers. We were lucky to be there when Mike ar...rived with his accordion to serenade us. Fully sated, we did our shopping and had a lovely stroll back to the Village. Another wonderful Saturday morning in our neighbourhood!
A few photos we inherited when we bought the property we call Queen Street Village. Weve been told the 2-storey part of the main house was built in 1850. The remainder, including our wonderful front porch, was added later with several renovations. The next 2 pictures are of the "Cottage", built in 1890 or so. The Nichols family lived on the property and operated their roofing and masonry business here from 1870 to the early 1970s.
Welcome to our Downtown neighbourhood. This morning we took a walk through Montebello Park and the Yates Street Heritage District.
Yesterday, our Village was one of five St. Catharines properties that were part of the CFUW Annual House Tour. It took us a few months to get things ready! Now that its over, we can kick back and relax - for a little while, anyway!
Renovated & painted - the birdhouses are ready for occupancy!

Some of the last of the wildflowers from the gardens here at Queen Street Village. Couldnt resist picking a few for our Sunday table.
When we were in PEI this summer we had to visit Skinners Pond, and the Stompin Tom Conner Museum. Found this sign in the gift shop and immediately thought of our own little pond.
We call it the green smile, the little strip of grass in front of the perennial garden that we planted in front of the Cottage this spring. We were concerned that it might not take hold since its base is pretty much gravel. Weve been watering diligently all summer. Guess thats why its still green!
We hosted our first Airbnb guests this weekend - first, a young couple from Ohio, then a young couple from Boston. Both couples came to explore Niagara. Looks like we may have found our calling - tour guides. We love the Niagara region and love promoting all that there is to enjoy while visiting the area. Glad we were able to help them make the most of their time here.
Queen Street Village now has a private guest suite available on Airbnb. We took Dans office (hes now retired) and turned it into the Executive, a beautiful guest suite with its own separate entrance. Check us out on the airbnb site - the address is 65 Queen Street, St. Catharines
Looking like Flanders Fields at the village.
The purple wall is done, which means were almost finished building the Village Square. Last thing on the list is the flagstone patio, but that will have to wait a little while. We have caulking and paint touch-ups to do on the Front House. And, eavestrough repair on The Cottage ... The list is never-ending when you have 4 buildings from the 1800s to look after. Good thing we love it!
The purple wall is happening!
One year ago, this building was a gutted, empty shell. Today, we gave a nod to the old structure by mounting an old beam to the side of the building, a totem, so to speak. All thats left to do is the flagstone patio and the purple wall and the Village Square will be complete!
Lots happening in the Village. The Cottage is getting a little makeover. Weve unearthed a pond and planted a perennial garden. Its been a busy day!
The Executive - Renos are now underway to convert Dans office to an airbnb guest suite. Coming Soon!
Signs of spring in the Village - finally! Time to landscape the Village Square for the tenants in the Cottage and the Coach House - sorry, no vacancies!
Thanks to Doug Setterington and Speedpro Imaging for doing such a nice job on our new sign. The city insisted that we have a directory listing the buildings on the property where people reside. It is necessary for emergency vehicles - and also convenient for fast food delivery vehicles!
