This week, SASS and Queen's University International Centre (QUIC) are celebrating International Education Week, which showcases how international education prepares students for the world. Although international education has been impacted by the move to online, we want to continue to highlight the value that it has for students. All week, we are profiling the strengths and experiences of students who have studied around the world bring to Queen’s. Today, Ashley explains how... schooling in Nigeria prepared her for her BA in Philosophy. Name: Chukwudubem Ashley Program: BA, Philosophy My high school education in Nigeria prepared me to handle a large workload. In my high school, students were required to take as many as 16 classes each semester. Although there were times where I felt overwhelmed by the amount of work, this experience allowed me to be able to manage my time more efficiently. It also prepared me for my current studies at Queen’s. I think Queen’s students would benefit from studying in Nigeria. With over 250 ethnic groups, students would have the opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions. They’ll also get to experience a different educational system. International education for me is having the ability to be part of a diverse society that you can learn and grow from. It is being able to share your experiences with others and vice versa. Looking to practice your English, learn about other cultures, or volunteer to support others? Check out the weekly English Conversation Group offered by Queen’s University International Centre (QUIC). https://quic.queensu.ca/get-i/english-conversation-program/ #iew2020 #internationaleducationweek #internationalstudents #queensu #queensuniversity #queensu2024 #queensu2023 #queensu2022 #qeensu2021

Santosh (Life Sciences, Class of 2023) is back with another blog post! In this week’s post, Santosh reveals that he has been feeling overwhelmed by never-ending due dates and a bit unorganized. To solve these issues, Santosh has been trying out some strategies to feel more structured and less stressed. I recommend setting dedicated times each week for all of your courses. To help you stay on track, set a dedicated day for each course. Regular structure will gradually bec...ome a habit, making it easier to remain up to date. In my science courses, each week builds on the last week’s work, so it is crucial to stay on top of lessons. Getting behind by only a week or two can lead you into a deep pit that is going to be hard to recover from (but if you need help, book an appointment with SASS’s Academic Skills specialists. They’ll get you back on track!). Even with a structured working week, Santosh finds himself using his study time looking at YouTube videos or messaging friends. To deter him from getting distracted, Santosh has tried out a reward system: Something that has helped me improve on this is to give myself rewards for sticking to my schedule and finishing tasks. For example, when I finish an assignment, I enjoy some downtime. I watch an episode of a show or play video games with my friends. It is just as crucial to have those breaks during the day as at the end of the day, because they help you relax and prevent exhaustion striking when you hit the books again. This reward-driven method has helped me be more focused and have quality study periods with minimal distractions. Remember: quality over quantity! If you are feeling overwhelmed with your workload, check out Santosh’s blog to see all of the strategies he’s been testing out: https://sass.queensu.ca/due-dates-structure-and-rewards/ #queensu #queensuniversity #queensu2024 #queensu2023 #queensu2022 #queensu2021

Kate (PhD Psychology, Year 1) is back with another blog post. This week, she's reviewing three useful strategies for improving your focus through that tough period she calls the "midterm grind." One strategy Kate tried was to turn off laptop notifications between 8am and 8.30pm: Without those annoying banners flying across my screen every five minutes, I am able to stay focused for longer periods of time. I don’t even miss the banners! I have actually been using this approa...ch for a few years now and would highly recommend it as a first step to anyone who is having trouble staying on-task. The score? 5 out of 5: an ideal strategy! Want to know what else Kate tried and how well it worked for her? Many students this week have been using our Ask Me Anything service to ask SASS’s peers about how to stay motivated during online learning and how to manage university expectations. Today, PLA Emma has some great advice to help you get motivated and manage the expectations of university students! Firstly, check out Academics 101 (https://sass.queensu.ca/courses/academics-101/#/) on the SASS website. This brief series has been designed with online learning in mind, and it i...s a great way to learn about the skills you need to succeed this semester and beyond. The lessons are broken down by subject matter, from math and science to the humanities, so you are sure to find some tips and tricks that work for you. I also encourage you to check out the Motivation and Procrastination and Time Management modules on the SASS website. These modules provide practical tips for staying motivated during online classes. For example, I often use the SASS Assignment Planner to break down large tasks into more manageable steps. This makes online work feel less overwhelming and is a helpful motivator. Not only does the SASS website have a ton of helpful tips, but SASS also hosts mini webinars throughout the semester. Check out the mini webinar schedule here: https://sass.queensu.ca/programs/workshops/#ATTEND . Finally, don’t hesitate to reach out to your instructors. Even though classes are online this semester, TAs and professors are always eager to hear from you and to help you succeed in their courses. If you have questions about studying and study skills, you can ask our Queen’s SASS Peer Learning Assistants using our online form. They’ll write back to you as soon as they can with personalized advice on how to brush up on your study skills!
