The Bay of Fundy is a tad blustery today with SE winds forecasted this morning at 40-45 knots and seas 5-6 meters (75-85km/h winds and 20’ seas). Video from Deep Cove, Grand Manan Island shows just how big some of the waves are that are rolling in. Newest population estimates put this species at 355 individuals.....
What a way to end a season! We were kindly invited out by our friends, the Jolly Breeze crew, for one last research cruise for 2020. Heading out mid-Bay (we could see Nova Scotia), we were able to ID two Humpback whales: Bottleneck and Bowline as well as observe 3 other individuals who didn't fluke (raise their tail). We hope you enjoy these photos from yesterdays trip and the info we were able to learn about these beautiful whales!! <3 ... Humpback Bottleneck was first catalogued in 2010 from Bar Harbour, Maine. Spotted again on the Grand Manan banks in 2014! Humpback Bowline was born in 2007 to Humpback whale, Vector. Last catalogued in 2018 from Gloucester, Mass. Thanks again to Joanne, Rob and Randy!!
Starting the calving season off with bad news, unfortunately. This male North Atlantic Right whale calf washed ashore on a barrier island in North Carolina this past Friday. Initial results show the small whale died during birth or shortly after, with no evidence of direct human harm. A huge blow to this critically endangered species.
Update on the entangled North Atlantic Right Whale spotted off the coast of New Jersey. Identified as a 4 year old male. The North Atlantic Right Whale population totals just over 400 individuals. We must protect these beautiful and important animals. ... https://www.neaq.org//new-england-aquarium-scientists-id/
