Queen's University International Centre (QUIC) 27.01.2021

First week of classes just ended, and this is Essi again! Over the break I enjoyed some really good ‘down time’ visiting with my brother and uncle, and I even enjoyed being outside in the snow! Because it was a very quiet holiday break, I took the opportunity watch the TV series ‘Shameless’ (an American comedy-drama), which I watched in French from start to finish! While watching this show with my relatives, it had me think about the sheer tenacity of relationshipsboth w...ith family and friendsand how relationships make us stronger and we thrive on social connections. For me, relationships and staying connected with family and friends is making 2020-21 much easier! This week, QUIC and Student Academic Success Services (SASS) are celebrating International Education Week, which showcases how international education prepares students for the world. Although international education has been impacted by the move to online, we want to continue to highlight the value that it has for students. All week, we are profiling the strengths and experiences of students who have studied around the world bring to Queen’s. Today, Ashley explains how schoo...ling in Nigeria prepared her for her BA in Philosophy. Name: Chukwudubem Ashley Program: BA, Philosophy My high school education in Nigeria prepared me to handle a large workload. In my high school, students were required to take as many as 16 classes each semester. Although there were times where I felt overwhelmed by the amount of work, this experience allowed me to be able to manage my time more efficiently. It also prepared me for my current studies at Queen’s. I think Queen’s students would benefit from studying in Nigeria. With over 250 ethnic groups, students would have the opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions. They’ll also get to experience a different educational system. International education for me is having the ability to be part of a diverse society that you can learn and grow from. It is being able to share your experiences with others and vice versa. Looking to practice your English, learn about other cultures, or volunteer to support others? Check out the weekly English Conversation Group offered by QUIC on Zoom that is wrapping up soon for the Fall and will continue again in January. Today, Elmira tells us about how her education in Iran developed her skills to take on her PhD program at Queen’s. Name: Elmira Program: PhD, Electrical and Computer Engineering My previous studies in Iran were an important step to learn about discipline, time management, teamwork, and other skills. My academic work gave me a major boost of confidence in my theoretical knowledge in my field of study. My education and experience have allowed me to become highly skilled in ...creative thinking by doing different projects in my courses. This experience has also helped me develop my communication skills as I was required to work with others colleagues. I feel that the skills which I gained are truly valuable, as it has prepared me for grad school. There are so many surprising things I’ve discovered about academic study at Queen’s. Under the supervision of highly qualified and educated professors at Queen’s University, there are so many opportunities for creativity and involvement in academic work. In addition, the ‘warm and friendly’ stereotype of Queen’s University and Queen’s University International Centre (QUIC), is true. The QUIC provides a friendly atmosphere and hosts many events to learn about different cultures and meet new people. Looking to connect with other students?
