Rarely we get calls to relocate baldfaced hornets. The circumstances need to be right. On a tree branch preferably for ease of removal. This was one worrisome drive to the new location

Well after a super wet day, the girls have a new home and have been transported to an isolation yard to be treated for potential diseases and fed to have enough stores for winter. Hopefully by this time next year I will be harvesting honey from these beautiful creatures. I hit my limit on bee venom today at around 100 stings to my hands and neck. It was a close thing to get my wedding ring off before the swelling required a hospital visit to cut it off ( the ring not the finger ). Picture credit to Mike Sietsma

One bee colony can produce 60 to 100 pounds of honey per year. An average worker bee makes only about 1/12 teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.

Swarm #5 and #4 Queens safe and sound! The lighter Queen is Brianna and waiting to name the darker one. Swarms are in the building mode, so always make sure to give some blank frames and thin syrup so they can put that urge to good use. I have seen a swarm build out a completely blank frame and the queen lay it out fully in 2 days. Update; Swarm #4 Queen is Danica

This is a virgin queen. She is getting ready to go on her mating flight. Potentially the only time she will ever see the outside world. She will mate with several drones who will supply her with a lifetime of sperm to fertilize her eggs to make female workers. After a successful mating flight (~80%) shr will return to the hive to lay 1600 to 2000 eggs a day during the spring/summer months. These truly are amazing creatures!

Another successful Bumblebee relocation to Arcadia Permaculture Farm!

This honeybee has filled her pollen sacs with resin/sap, otherwise known as propolis! Honeybees collect propolis from trees/bushes and use it to seal cracks in their hives to protect & maintain a healthy environment. Propolis is a powerful anti-viral, anti-bacterial & anti-fungal and has many internal & topical uses for humans.
