Bingeing on too much processed and manufactured food, even over a short period, can lead to a reduction in your body’s sensitivity to insulin. This is the horm...one that is crucial in regulating our blood sugar levels. Usually when we eat a meal we digest and absorb the nutrients, which are distributed to body tissues over the next several hours. But, when the ingested meal is large it becomes a much more difficult task for the body and it puts greater stress on the organs that regulate these processes, particularly the pancreas the organ that releases insulin. This means more that sugar or glucose is needed to produce the same amount of insulin. Even a week of gorging on high-fat and sugary foods particularly if the pattern occurs regularly can tip your body into a pre-diabetic state. Each time you overeat, you are creating a large metabolic challenge to overcome, which leads to damage in the tissues and accumulates over time. Lastly, overeating may also compromise the immune system's ability to fight infection. Obesity is linked to an increased rate of infectious disease. Don’t procrastinate about feeling bettertake action and invest in your health. Stress and the Immune System Stress is an inevitable part of life, and can be psychological or physical. Our bodies can adapt to acute, short-term stresses, but chronic stress puts a strain on our adaptive mechanisms and suppresses immunity. Short term stress is natural and our bodies and immune systems are able to respond to acute stresses. However, our immune systems respond less favourably to chronic stress. Chronic stress decreases the amount of natural killer cells in ou...r body, which are immune cells that help fight viruses. Prioritizing the activities that help you de-stress can be very beneficial for immunity and overall health. Nutrients for Optimal Immunity: Zinc The food that we eat provides the nutrients that we need in order to help our immune systems function optimally. One of the key nutrients that our immune systems need is zinc, which has been described as the gatekeeper of immune function. T and B cells work in our immune system to fight pathogens and keep us healthy. Zinc is necessary for T and B cells to mature and function normally.... Research has shown that zinc supplementation can reduce the duration of the common cold. Food sources of zinc include oysters, red meat, poultry, beans, nuts, whole grains, and seafood. As always, consult a professional before adding a supplement to your routine. If you would like more information about this or our other services, please contact Sierra or Danielle at (236) 425-2205

Sleep and the Immune System One of the best things you can do for your immune system is to get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. During sleep, your body makes important chemical messengers called cytokines that help create immune responses. Research has shown that lack of sleep impairs immunity, and will result in a greater likelihood of becoming sick after being exposed to a virus such as the common cold.... You can improve your sleep by practicing good sleep hygiene, which is the environment and habits that promote quality sleep. This includes avoiding electronic use before bed, sleeping in a dark, cool room, following a nightly routine, avoiding caffeine later in the day, and keeping a consistent sleep schedule. Other beneficial lifestyle tips are to get daily exposure to sunshine when possible and exercise regularly. Stay tuned for more tips for a healthy immune system this week!
