COLD WEATHER FLOOR CARE! Winter is here, and with it cold and dry weather. A wide plank wood floor is affected by the humidity level in the home. When the temperature drops and the heat is cranked up, all wood floors can react negatively. Small cracks and fissures may form on the face of the boards and in severe cases the boards can cup or even sheer. Please be sure to monitor the relative humidity in your home and if it drops below 30% it’s time to take action! Below is a ...simple list of dos and don'ts to ensure that your floors stay healthy and beautiful throughout the year. Monitor the humidity levels of your home with a hygrometer; these can be purchased online. Nest and other modern thermostats come standard with this feature. Keep the temperature below 75 degrees in your home during cold days and nights. Keep a few windows cracked to allow for air movement. Install a humidifier or two to add moisture to the air when the temperature really drops and it gets dry. When leaving your home for long periods of time, lower the temperature to maximum 65 degrees and make sure to leave a few windows open for air movement. Keep a humidifier going or leave some pots with water in each room. If you see cracks starting to form on the floor boards start running humidifiers ASAP to counterbalance the excessively dry air. Keep in mind that floors like humans feel best and are healthiest when the humidity levels are between 35% and 65%. Protecting your floors also means protecting yourself and your family.
