INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY. Today, August 31st marks International Overdose Awareness Day. Given the current toxic and poisoned supply in our community we do not refer to these deaths as overdose’s, rather drug poisonings. We acknowledge that the drug supply is currently poisoned and its these toxic and poisonous drugs that are leading to the significant rates of overdoses we are seeing across the province and in our community here on the Sunshine Coast. Today ...is about honoring the lives and legacies of those we have lost in our communities through these drug poisoning's and it is also about bringing awareness around the toxic supply and the supports available to those using substances in our community. Here in BC we are seeing record numbers of "overdoses" this year, each month the numbers get higher. We are seeing this parallel here on the Sunshine Coast where we have lost loved and valued members of our community to the poisoned drug supply this year. Each of these lives was precious, each life was valued, and each person deserves to be alive today. Today as a team and community we remember those we have lost and the impacts that they had on us and our community. These folks may be gone but they will never be forgotten and their spirit we continue to drive us on to fight this pandemic each and every day. For those still using substances in our community, know that we see you, we hear you, we respect you, we care about you and your right to life. We will never stop trying to support folks in their addiction and will always look for ways to keep you and our community safe. If you are using substances we would encourage you today and every day to the following: Access a Safe Consumption Space (SCS) or the Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) at the Sechelt shelter (1pm 1am) NEVER USE ALONE Get trained to use naloxone and carry this with you Get your drugs tested (for fentanyl and benzos) testing available at the Sechelt shelter 24/7. Access safe supply options see your Doctor or connect with VCH. Consider detox and treatment Download the LIFEGUARD app Use the peer phone line operated by peers from the Community Action Team. Please know that anyone struggling with addiction and is looking for support can find non-judgmental support daily at the Overdose Prevention Site at the Sechelt shelter. Staff at both Hightide Supportive Housing and the Sechelt shelter are also on hand to chat to you around safe use and the tools currently available to keep you safe. It takes a community to keep each other safe and we want our community to know the team at RainCity are here to help.

This week we launched our peer led work program at Hightide Supportive Housing. The peer work program at Hightide aims to give our tenants paid work opportunities in their community. We are super excited at RainCity to get this program off the ground. Below is a picture of our newly formed Neighbourhood Clean Team who will be out 7 days a week cleaning up the areas in Sechelt around the Hightide program. Our peers will be wearing high visibility jackets and we encourage you... to stop and say hello if you see them in the community. Please also feel free to let our peer workers know if you see any areas around Hightide Ave that needed to be cleaned up, they will be happy to help. It is clear that the supportive housing in Sechelt is helping to change the lives of those residing here and has given many a space to call home in our community. Our folks having been asking how they can give back to the community and their neighbours and the neighbourhood clean team is just one of those ways. We thank the peer workers for getting involved and continuing to be good neighbours in our community. Our folks rock!!

A huge heartfelt THANK YOU from RainCity and our folks to the children in grade 3 at Cedar Grove Elementary in Gibsons, who recently held a bake sale to raise funds for our folks. The children made a fantastic amount and used these funds to go shopping and created personalized handmade gift bags for their neighbours without a home. These gifts bags will be very much appreciated and will no doubt bring smiles to peoples faces in the coming days. It’s inspiring to see young c...hildren and our elementary schools teaching children about homelessness in our community. It really does take a community to support those without homes, thank you to the kids for showing such compassion. A special mention to the teachers who made this a reality for our children. It took a lot of time, work and coordination but the outcome was incredible. Thanks to Cedar Grove and School District 46 for your support. Below is a photo of the gift bags created by the children. They will be warmly received.

We are hearing from folks in Sechelt who have been stranded there after work with the road closures and bus cancellations. RainCity Housing and the Sechelt Shelter are proud to once again partner with St Hilda’s by the Sea and their parishioners. Many of you will already know what a supporter St Hilda’s has been to our folks over the years and they continue to support the shelter and our work even though we are not operating on site. We continue to thank St Hilda’s, the Reverend Clarence Li and the parishioners for supporting the work of the shelter and helping us to continue to support our fol...ks. Tomorrow (Thursday 20th) St Hilda’s will be hosting their first Posada for the homeless and migrants. The Posada is an indoor/outdoor event re-enacting Mary and Joseph looking for a roof to labour their first child and being turned away. The event will involve meeting at the Sechelt Shelter at 3pm and walking together to St Hilda’s. The event will culminate with a potluck feast at St. Hilda's from 5 - 7 pm. We encourage people to dress up and meet at the shelter at 3pm to join this event and the procession to St Hilda’s, we welcome folks to wear dress up for this event. If you would like to donate food for this event you can drop food off at St Hilda’s from 5pm. If you would like to join this event then please come to the shelter in Sechelt at 5653 Wharf Ave at 3pm tomorrow. Again we would like to thank St Hilda’s and their parishioners for partnering with RainCity and this event. We are excited to be part of this event and we look forward to the procession tomorrow.

This season Robby will again be responsible for the day to day operations of the Gibsons shelter in his role as Assistant Manager. If you would like to be trained to use naloxone or need your drugs checked then please swing by the shelter and speak with staff. Finally, we would like to take a moment to thank BC Housing, Town of Gibsons, the local MLA Nick Simmons, Sunshine Coast Homeless Advisory Committee, Christ the King Church and the shelter neighbours for supporting us in getting the doors open to the Gibsons shelter. We couldn’t provide this vital resource without the support of our community. Please get the word out to anyone seeking shelter that Gibsons is open tonight and every night until March 31st. Let’s work together to make a safer community for all. - NG
