‘A quiet forest’, ‘a tropical sea’, ‘a rush of water’ a few of the names you will find for the delicate glass art pieces and jewellery created by Diane Brinton of Flow Studio Designs. Diane uses a torch mixing oxygen with gas to produce an intense heat that melts glass onto a steel rod, mandrel, for flame sculpting or onto an Italian hollow steel pipe, canello, for blowing. This process creates images that reflect a connection to nature and capture a sense of stillness, taking the observer momentarily away.

We carry this wonderful limited edition print by the late Coast Salish First Nations artist Gus Modeste. . The story behind the inspiration for the piece is a heart wrenching tale. In July 2018, an endangered southern resident orca gave birth to a calf that died the same day. The grieving mother carried her calf for an unprecedented 16 days of mourning through the Salish Sea. Gus Modeste honoured the apparent mourning ritual in ‘Mother’s Love’. . In a hopeful turn of events the Orca, J35, became a mother again when she gave birth to a healthy calf in September 2020.

This #givingtuesday we would love to inspire you to donate this week to our fundraising campaign to benefit Cowichan Women Against Violence (CWAV). Rainforest Arts is open to accept donations Wednesday to Sunday 11am-4pm. . For every donation received you can enter into a draw for a Ray Sapergia wood bowl or vase. Ray, a local artist based out of Victoria, gains his inspiration from the beauty of nature. It is not my goal to make perfect pieces of turned wood, but rather to find the most unique, misshapen, unusual pieces and turn them into one-of-a-kind works of art. Thank you you Ray for generously donating these pieces so that we can raise funds and essential items for an organization that does such important work.
