On the Serendipity Shelf this week...Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam. Amanda and Clay and their two children head out of New York City to spend a week at a rental home in the country. Less than 48 hours after they arrive an older couple, who claim to be the owners, show up at their door in a panic. They say that a sudden blackout has swept through the city and have come to their country home in search of shelter. Discovering that cell service, television and internet are down Clay and Amanda are not sure what to believe. What follows is an interesting study in "what would you do?" It is suspenseful and provocative and you will be asking what bonds are worth forging and keeping in moments of crisis.

On the Serendipity Shelf this week...Songs for the End of the World by Saleema Nawaz. This novel was written and revised between 2013 and 2019 and is so timely. It tells the story of a handful of people who find themselves living through a global pandemic. What is different about this story though is how intimate it is. Instead of telling the story on a global scale the author instead tells it through the eyes of a handful of people. As you read you discover that these people as interconnected in a variety of ways. It also reminds us that disaster can bring out the best in people and that coming together may be what saves us in the end.

On the Serendipity Shelf this week...A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers. This is a bewitching tale of passion, reincarnation and magic. Helen has lived several lives-only she does not know it until she meets a man who claims he has watched over her for centuries. She is caught in a curse, forced to relive the same tragic events over and over through the centuries. With each rebirth she develops uncanny powers. Once she has become her most powerful she must find a way to break the curse before her time runs out. This is a beautiful love story that weaves together both the supernatural and historical fiction.
