' ( )!!! Dogs have up to 300 million olfactory (smell) receptors in their nose. That's 50x more than what humans have. And the part of the dog's brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is 40x greater than ours. Their sense of smell is much stronger than their sight, so to have them on a walk without allowing them to use their nose and smell would be like us humans walking with a blindfold. Take your time on your walks this weekend and let your dog take in all their is to sniff!!

June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 (Wednesdays 7-8) The primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first 3 months of life. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 (Thursdays 7-8) Our human world has a lot going on, and all that busyness can be challenging and scary for your dog. This fear can often come out in the form of aggression causing your dog to make embarrassing displays at the end of her leash - lunging, barking and growling at dogs, strangers, skateboards, cars, bikes, etc. If you dread leaving your house with your dog for fear of what or... whom you may run into then this class is for you. If your dog is overly timid and you want them to gain confidence around other people or dogs, then this class is also for you. We will cover the following: Canine Communication Understanding reactivity and what your dog's behaviour means How to improve your dog’s leash skills & focus Building your dog's confidence around handling, people, and other dogs Understanding how to set your dog up for success How to modify fear, reactivity and aggression $ ( ) @. ..

It is SO important to start exposing your new puppy to as many new people, animals and environments as you can, as soon as you bring them home! The first three months are the period when sociability outweighs fear so this is the primary window of opportunity for puppies to adapt to new people, animals, and experiences. ' : Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of a...ge. This is why it is SO important to be proactive and work really hard in those beginning months to safely socialize them! Raise the Woof Dog Training will be offering starting in June! Puppies should receive at least one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to attending puppy classes. Talk to your vet to determine what is safe your puppy. : https://avsab.org//Puppy-Socialization-Position-Statement-

Recently I was out walking my dog and I passed a person walking two dogs from across the street. One of their dogs started barking and lunging. This is a common problem people have with there dogs (myself included) and we call this . The person all but put the dog in a choke hold and stared yelling at him at an embarrassingly loud volume. Often times this behavior stems from fear, and the way this person handled it is the absolute thing to do and here's wh...y. ' : The dog is behaving ridiculously, obviously there's no reason to be afraid of a dog that is all the way across the street on a leash. I will tell him that he's bad and he can't do that and yell at him. He won't want me to yell at him again so next time he won't behave this way. ' : I feel very uncertain about that other dog across the street. I will behave the way I know how and let that dog know not to come near me. This has worked in the past. My owner is yelling loudly (I don't understand what they are saying) and hurting me. This always happens when I see dogs across the street. This confirms that seeing dogs across the street is bad. It is also making me a bit afraid of my owner. ? An easy first step to work towards helping your dog feel better about the situation is to start to pair seeing other dogs (or whatever their trigger is) with treats. The trick to this is being far enough away from the trigger so that your dog will notice, but not have an over the top reaction. It's ok if they start to growl or bark, but you want them to still take a treat and look to you (even if you have to lure them with a treat). This could be across the street, or in the above example across the street and into a field or into a back alley to get even more distance. Don't distract your dog from looking at the other dog altogether (though this is a great strategy if you can't get enough distance), but let your dog see the other dog and then give the treat. We want them to know that seeing the other dog is what got them their treat. With enough repetition they will better about seeing other dogs and learn a better way to react. ? The answer is no. They are way too emotional at that point for any learning to occur. Think of it as reasoning with a toddler during a tantrum. . !! : @.

' ' : Check out the entrance before entering to make sure dogs aren't congregating there Pay close attention to your dog's play style, interrupting play if necessary to help your dog calm down... Move around the park so your dog needs to keep an eye on you Remove your dog if they appear afraid Remove your dog if he is bullying others Leave special toys at home to avoid resource guarding problems ': Allow your dog to enter the park if their is a "gang" right next to the entrance Believe that dogs can "work it out" if you just let them do so Congregate at a picnic table or other area and chat with dog owners without watching your own dog Let your frightened dog remain in the park and hope things get better Assume a dog is aggressive when it is only trying to communicate its discomfort

: Practicing "Leave it" with your dog is a great self control exercise!! It is also a great life skill to have to keep your dog from picking up potentially dangerous things. To begin to teach this skill, put a treat in a closed hand. Tell your dog "leave it". Then just wait until they get tired of pawing or nibbling at your hand. Once they back off (even just a bit) mark that behavior with a "YES". Then you can tell them to take the treat. It may take a long time the first few tries, but eventually your dog will catch on!
