Fast Friends by Heather O’Connor and Illustrated by Claudia Davila is a wonderful addition to the Forest of Reading program and an excellent tool for developing empathy with children. Read-Aloud Goal to develop understanding (empathy) not pity (sympathy) Take time to learn about people who are different Learn about how to include diverse people in a meaningful way... Talk about the author: This book is inspired by her daughter Teach about wheelchair etiquette: http://scholastic.ca//ACT_FastFriends_Wheelchair-Etiquette See more

I will never forget taking an Advanced Outdoor Leadership course just before starting my Masters in Ed. The head instructor pulled out a picture book with a group of adults and lead an amazing session using that book. That was over 20 years ago and it left a profound impact on me as an educator and the possibilities of picture books. https://www.nytimes.com//sunday/picture-books-reading.html

New, old routine! We used to be really great about getting in some journal time. It’s been a looooooooong time and we are ready to get that habit rolling again. Parent tip: put it in your schedule. Our journal reminders are on the daily schedule board AND set as a reminder on my digital calendar. This makes the kids aware and accountable and ensures I don’t forget. . .... . . #socialemotionallearning #socialemotionalwellness #journalforkids #mentalwellbeingmatters #parentinghacks #parentingtips #thedotjournal #thedot See more

It’s Fri-yay! Let’s have some fun. In my house every Saturday we watch a documentary together. Without fail, every week I’m greeted with moans and groans about this. Typically 5 minutes in they are sucked into the content and by the end they are brimming with questions and exploring answers. Every week they admit it was a pretty good show. Will they ever admit they don’t mind our documentary Saturdays? Probably not, but secretly I know they love them. Share your stories in the comments! Happy Fri-Yay!!
