Bre here ~ by some MIRACLE I am jumped through the first couple hoops and now I am competing for a large film award from the Czech Republic! It equates to approximately $10,000 Canadian dollars. I NEED YOUR HELP! The films with the most views go to the jury where they deliberate who wins the prize. My goal is to make it to the jury but that is entirely dependent on VIEWS! It just sunk in. WE. ARE. GOING. TO. THE. JURY. COMPETING FOR $10,000. Someone pinch me. I am so proud of my cast and crew, and so grateful for the Facebook shares, CBC news, my Dean sending out a mass email, word of mouth, EVERYONE. Every single one of you I am grateful for.

I thought I’d explain the process of making In the Shadows: 1 I wrote grant letters upon grant letters to receive the funding to make this film. The funding body wishes to remain anonymous. 2 I asked several people to take part in my film; 10 said yes and then 8 dropped out, leaving me worried there would be no film. 3 researched and hired a videographer and somehow found a venue who didn’t charge a penny. 4 Sat in my directors chair overlooking the sunset and poured HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS into EXACTLY the tone, vibe, and purpose I wanted. 5 feedback on little tiny technicalities twice before the final draft was complete. 6 spent a lot of money entering festivals I aligned with strongly and felt that even my micro budget and inexperience had a shot. 7 I sent 62 personal emails, 24 texts, and 40 Facebook messages. 8 and NOW, after my work, it’s YOUR turn. I am not a fantastic film director. I have zero training in the field; I truly accidently fell into the industry; I had no connections with anyone in the field. Honestly, I did not even know I had the title of "film director" until I saw the credits screen of my first film. ... I am, however, a passionate mental health advocate. I believe in amplifying the voices of those who have lived experiences. I believe these resilient people deserve space to share their story. I have an ability to tell a story that pushes the envelope of comfortable and kind of "punches people in the gut" when they realize how difficult it is to navigate our mental health system. THAT is why I spent hours planning and directing "In the Shadows: Untold Stories of the Mental Health System". THAT is why I wrote letters asking for sponsors. THAT is why I sacrificed some of my study time to preparing this film. And honestly, THAT is why it is winning awards around the world. The wins are not about me...the awards show that esteemed judges are realizing our reality. It's not okay. And I will keep fighting, keep advocating, keep moving forward, on a lifelong journey of reforming a model of care that desperately needs improvement. I have NEVER competed for $10k; right now I am. In the film world, I had a micro-budget. The festival told me I am competing against people with budgets of thousands of dollars. That is only fueling me more to make it to the jury. It was a small budget, with an inexperienced director, in an old gymnasium, with real people not actors...and I still think we can do it - WE being the key word.
