If you are a non-resident of Canada, you cannot invest in a TFSA (even if you are a Canadian citizen). Beware of the advice of banks; I've seen poor advice given by banks on several occasions, including the example in this article. https://financialpost.com//non-resident-appeals-tfsa-tax-p

Risk is an uncomfortable but crucial topic to consider, especially during this COVID19 pandemic. Canada Life's "Know Your Risk" calculator demonstrates the probability of a major health event occurring based on your demographic age and health status. Do you know what your risk is? I tried it. The likelihood of becoming disabled, critically ill, or dying before age 65 for one member of a non-smoking couple in their early 30s: 77%. Try it! And then let's chat about which type ...of insurance is best for you to take care of your family and yourself. #insurance #lifeinsurance #criticalillnessinsurance #disabilityinsurance #health #healthcarecosts #covid19 https://www.canadalife.com/insurance/risk-calculator.html#/

In this economic downturn, triggered by COVID-19, there has never been a better time to invest as everything at the moment is "on sale." When the market bounces back (as it always does after downturns), investors who have bought at a low cost will benefit the most. Schedule your no-cost complimentary phone consultation today! Call me at 647-470-2639 or email me at [email protected] to set up a time.

Home buyers, never put an unconditional offer on a house without having the financing for it. In a market of bidding wars it is tempting but could cost you dearly. https://www.canadianmortgagetrends.com//toronto-homebuyer/

Hi everyone, this is the financial planning process that I take with potential clients. Would you like a written financial plan catered to your needs at no cost and no obligation to you?

While there is legitimate risk in investing, the higher risk resides in investor behaviour: timing the market, value traps, and risk aversion (opportunity cost). https://www.blackrockblog.com//rethinking-risk-in-equities/

Are you a small business owner? Good news! The government proposes to reduce small business tax rate to 3.2% from the current 3.5% rate, effective January 1, 2020. On the other hand, the Ontario’s small business (non-eligible) dividend tax credit rate would be reduced from approximately 3.29% to approximately 2.99% of the grossed-up dividend, effective January 1, 2020. For more info and how this may impact you, let's chat.... https://business.financialpost.com//ontario-to-cut-small-b

Job loss is a very difficult thing to go through for anyone. Despite the availability of Employment Insurance (EI), it is still essential to have an emergency fund, because EI caps at a maximum. EI is available to you if your earnings were insurable and you lost your job out of no fault of your own (without cause), but there is a caveat.... The amount you receive is 55% of your INSURABLE income, with a current insurable maximum of $53,100. This means that you can receive no more than $562 per week ($53,100 per year x 0.55 / 52 weeks). Visit https://www.canada.ca//services/benefits/ei/ei-regular-ben for more details on eligibility and maximum payments. Lets chat about the different emergency fund options and securing yourself before a potential job loss. The worst financial decision is to have to go into credit card debt due to unpreparedness, paying interest of 23% or more.

Buying a house in the GTA has never been harder. Some have turned to creative ways of buying. But the good news for first time buyers is that the Home Buyers' Plan (HBP) has increased to $35,000 per person ($70,000 a couple) just a few years ago. Yet another reason to invest in RRSPs. What's the advantage of HBP? You can pull out of your RRSPs tax-free for two years. You then either pay the tax in full or over 15 years.... https://business.financialpost.com//as-housing-affordabili

Hello everyone, today I want to discuss Behavioural Finance. Behavioural Finance involves using concepts from psychology to explain some of the biases and cognitive errors that we make in investing. The three I want to highlight are as follows: - Fear of Loss: leads to the disposition effect, which involves selling winning investments too early and hold losing investments too long. This occurs because there is more pleasure in gains than losses. However, in subsequent months..., winning investments tend to outperform losing investments [1]. - Overconfidence: leads to too much active trading. Active trading is essentially holding investments for a short period of time, buying low and selling high. Studies have shown that active trading leads to underperformance [2]. - Portfolio Creation and Homogeneity: One common bias is Familiarity Bias, which is the preference to invest in familiar investments. Diversification in geography, industry, and type of investments are essential. The average portfolio in North America holds four stocks, whereas the optimal level of diversification is more than 300 stocks [3]. Mutual fund are a good way to diversify by exposing investors to stocks or bonds of competing companies in different regions and industries [4]. Let's chat about how IG Wealth Management combats these. Sources: 1. Terrance Odean. Are Investors Reluctant to Realize Their Losses? The Journal of Finance, 2002. Brad M. Barber and Terrance Odean. Parents, with rising tuition fees, do you have an RESP account for your child's post-secondary education? If not, you're missing out on "free money." The government matches 20 cents on the dollar to a maximum of $500 a year (against a $2,500 contribution). This is in addition to returns on your RESP investment. The earlier you invest, the greater the benefit.
