It’s that time of year again, with winter snow fall means snow shovelling. Shovelling often involves a dangerous combination of heavy lifting, twisting and throwing snow. This can lead to a disc or muscle injuries. Here are some tips to reduce injuries: Warm up: Clearing snow by manually shoveling is a form of aerobic exercise. Preparing the body by stretching the legs , arms, back and shoulders (hold a stretch for minimum 30 seconds each) can help prepare the muscles for t...he stresses of shovelling. Shovel Frequently : Try to avoid letting your snow pileup. Try to shovel as frequently as possible, this way you avoid having to shovel heavy loads at once. Avoid early mornings or right after waking up from sleep. During this time your disc’s are hydrated to their maximum meaning you are at a higher risk of damage. Dress Warmly: Lower temperatures constrict the blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the active muscles that are constantly at work during shoveling. Wearing layers of clothing that are insulating, warm, loose, and water-repelling can help keep the body warm, improving oxygen supply and blood flow. Proper Technique: Never lift, push when you can.
